This funny dust looking stuff has appeared on the screen, it’s a Samsung galaxy s8
Contrast up on this one so it’s easier to see

Looks like the seal has failed on it (assuming that 'dust' is on the inside and can't be wiped off?.
My S7 died last weekend on a corbett in the Galloways, rain finally got it. 5 years flawless service though to be fair.
Phone AIDS. The bad kind.
I solved this problem by carrying a small shaving mirror for my nose candy.
Dust under screen protector? Or no screen protector and it's slowly dying?

Snap, just did 5 years with an S7 also.
Got a new s10e. Absolutely brilliant. No edge screen, waterproof, sensible size, fingerprint scanner on the power button is incredibly good and reminds me of the s7 main button style.
Got a new s10e.
Seeing as my XZ1 is now playing silly sausages and crashing repeatedly, just three weeks out of contract....
I'm tempted by s10e.
Is the Samsungary os still frustratingly baked in over the top of Android?
Sadly I can't get a great camera, waterproof, NFC and headphone jack phone on Android One....

Seconded. Also, fully flat screen and comes with a screen protector fitted from the box.
Seriously impressed.

Nope, just plain and simple. It works.
Hmmmm.
Matt, massive Sony waterproof phone fan here, but they've all gone massive and have the odd screen size.
S10e is a great size, has headphone jack, waterproof and all that good shizzle. Have a look.
Would never happen with an iPhone
however a battery would never die if Samsung
That's definitely dust under the glass screen. It can be sorted but it's a right faff to do yourself in my experience.
My last 2 phones have been Pixels and they are seriously good imo. Don't see me changing brand anytime soon.
Sadly I can’t get a great camera, waterproof, NFC and headphone jack phone on Android One….
Bought a Motorola G8+ instead of going down the contract route, tenner a month for 16gb on my virgin SIM, 240 for the phone.
Lots of phones are 3 year contract by default now, 30 a month over a grand, for a bloody phone.
Does just about all you ask, splashproof only though. Camera is brilliant.
I'm done with contracts.
Yep, I bought my Pixel seconds hand and been on giffgaff for years.

I agree. And then something like the OP has had happens - or like mine which has been faultless up until now decides to fall over and battery start playing up too. Not worth the £1k..

Yes, but you can go through and turn everything bixby flavoured off and hide them all in a folder.
Having the "face shaping" mode active as default for the selfie camera is a commentary on society itself.

‘Cept it’s not a phone - it’s a complete pocket computer with a wireless modem built in.
If you want just a phone, you can get one that sends texts as well for a few quid, but I expect you want rather more functionality than that...
Oh, and it’s worth pointing out that if you wanted to buy something like a Nokia N95 without a contract it would have cost roughly £750, around twelve years ago. And it was a shit device, too; I had one after believing the reviews and it did nothing at all well, not even make phone calls.
Things have moved on a bit since then...
Are "lots of phones" really actually "over a grand"? They're flagship outliers surely? Outside of your iPhone MCMXCIX a relatively high-end handset costs a third of that.
Is that £30/month including the service plan?

£500 in today's money by my reckoning.

Yep, which is what my 240 quid Motorola is too.
My point is that if you avoid the flagship brands - samsung and apple, there's every bit as good phones out there. YMMV.
I really like my S10e for all the reasons above, likely the best phone I’ve had all things considered. I was lucky to get mine when laptopsdirect were knocking them out at £360. Non contract is the way to go, I have the £10 per month 30gb smarty chip in mine and I never have to give a thought about any other cost.
Turn Bixby off and install your favourite non Samsung apps and it’s pretty easy to manage. I really like the adaptive battery mode also, which analyses, predicts and reacts your use to give you the right battery mode at the right time.

Spigen caeses are brilliant, basic, cheap, but work superbly. Why can't the big brands give you one with the phone? G8 came with one.

This is the downside. I've turned it all off but it shouldn't be such an involved thing. Who knows, bixby may actually be OK, but being forced puts you off! It's the jar jar binks of the tech world.
I just wish you could reprogram the bixby button to be a camera button. It's no bother as it is but could actually be useful!
More Google Pixel devices supported on LineageOS now, Pixel, 2, 3, and 4. Stock Android 10, plus a few nice little features not available yet on other devices.

Superficially as good, but the Samsung and Apple have the best cameras on the market, the best screens on the market, 3 years of support, etc.

You can, there are various apps which can remap it to toggle the torch etc
This is the one i use, it's a bit clunky but does the job

Picked up an official Samsung case in John Lewis for a fiver the other day. Very tactile and slim.

Double tap the power button. Simple.
When my last iphone, a 7, started to die during cold rides and hikes, at a mere 16 months old, apple couldn't have been less interested, as per below.

Thankfully that pesky EU forced them to give a 2 year warranty by default a few years ago, same for most other manufacturers.
