[Closed] What's wrong with MS Outlook?

I bought a new laptop yesterday, running Windows 8.1, and uploaded MS Office 2010 today at work.

Having tried what I think is every possible combination of every email address I have, I have yet to get Outlook to work. When I try to manually configure settings for one address, and click 'Check Name', it spins for awhile, then tells me that the name cannot be resolved, and when I try to configure for another address, it just tells me to enter my credentials before telling me that they are no good and getting me to enter them again.

I have tried to use both 'Exchange compatible' and POP/IMAP ways of entering details but nothing works. Equally, I have tried on a variety of internet connections. My IT technicians at work also tried for more than an hour, but they could make no headway.

I don't think I am doing anything wrong, but it may be something simple I am forgetting. Otherwise, it could be that Outlook has a problem. All the same addresses have synced flawlessly with my iPhone and iPad.

Any ideas?

Firewall / ports being blocked?
Can you get a webpage up on it?

it could be any number of things but Outlook 2010 does work. What I would try is:

1. does it work on this machine using the windows Mail client instead? if it does then Outlook is the problem otherwise the problem is the machine

2. Does it work at home rather than at work? if so then maybe your work network is blocking something

most likely for me is that you have some sort of AV software messing with it - the usual crap you get on new machines. I would either disable that or rip it off but I'm guessing your IT folks will have done that already

good luck - this stuff is horrible 🙁

Don't think it's a firewall issue, as I have tried it both from home and from work. And my IT guys stripped all the pre-packaged AV stuff from the machine, although I do have their recommended free AVG software running. Should I disable that, do you think?

Assuming you have internet connectivity, try this in this order:

1. Is outlook in work offline mode?
2. Re-name the OST and PST files (with outlook shut down)
3. Close outlook delete you outlook profile and restart.
4. Re-install Office.

i would disable AVG just to be sure but it is good and very unlikely to cause the problem

'check name' in Outlook 2010 is dependent upon autodiscover, and troubleshooting can be complex. Microsoft Remote Connectivity Analyzer (the Outlook Anywhere test) would be a good place to start. Good luck but anything more would be chargeable 😉

Had this problem with a laptop at work today (Win 7/Outlook 2010)
Problem was that there was a username to login, but with a blank password.

Turns out it screws up something somewhere

Mmm, as mentioned above Outlook isn't so good at working out what your settings are itself - often you need to enter them manually but your IT guys should have done that. However, if your email is actually hosted by your employer through a proxy it can get messy and I've seen otherwise very smart IT people get caught by that before.

I would try a generic gmail or hotmail address first as the settings for those are widely available on the internet (or we can tell you). If that works you know the problem isn't either Outlook or your computer but rather your settings

You haven't had your email provider change in the last month have you?

I have this at work when setting new PC's up. If I enter their email address (username) and password it fails. Connecting to Hosted Exchange, using Autodiscover.

Install Office 2010 Service Pack 1 and try again, it works first time for me.

Get new IT guys, I'm not sure Outlook is the problem here.
