Some variety of horse/deer/bastard fly. Kill it with fire, immediately.

Possibly a cow fly?

Isn't that what Desperate Dan used to eat in The Dandy?

If I thought for even a second that that was a horsefly, the last thing I would have been doing was offer it my thumb to snack on during a photo shoot. 🙂

Knowing how much reaction, infection and pain a small-ish Clegg fly can inflict, I seriously hope the OP flattened the bastard.

I am not particularly fond of wasps, but even they serve a purpose, being underrated pollinators. But horseflies are the work of Satan.

Yeah my thumbs normal shape, was just sort of angled funny in that pic! It was from tip of thumb to knuckle, luckily it decided I didn't look tasty enough, think it was just enjoying the sun, probably digesting the half pint of blood it just had off someone else

It's only females that bite and feed on blood, to get protein for thier babies. A mysogonist might find a joke there.

Upshot is, you only need to kill 50% of them 😂
