Just thinking about countries around the world, most countries or their people have made some sort of positive contribution to the world in some way at some point, I'm struggling with Somalia, can anyone think of anything...?

I'm asking a genuine question here, no need for the thread to go downhill...

Not sure I get your point. Is there a reason why Somalia should impress you in some way?

Rageh Omar, BBC journalist?
Mo Farah?

Look through this list and add to your knowledge: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Somalis

Then tell us what positive contribution you have made.

What have YOU contributed to the world?

I'm glad I don't know many people like you in real life.

I'm not asking to be impressed, I'm asking if the country has made any notable positive mark on the history of the world.

Truly pathetic by the way chaps, if this is the best we can do.

Somehow I get the impression if I'd asked what's the point of, say, Iceland, the general tone of responses would have been wholley different..

Why not investigate this matter yourself, instead of pretending that you're not being juvenile on here?

Juvenile eh... 😕

If the answer to every question asked on here was go and investigate it yourself, there wouldn't be much to discuss really would there...

I refer to my point above, if I'd asked what is the point of Iceland in exactly the same way, no-one would have batted an eyelid!

And I'm the one being juvenile.. 🙁

I think the OP asked the question perfectly fine. The reason the question has not been answered is because they would get flamed. You know the answer your self. Nothing.

Unfortunately they are povity stricken like much of Afrika ka ka ka.

It's a shame. And will never change / will get worse.

A sort of serious answer:

It's one natural advantage, it's highly strategic location, is also it's biggest disadvantage. As a result it's 'purpose' seems to be as an ampitheatre of war, going back forever...it was once called British Somaliland...who'd've guessed, eh?

Which is bad luck if you're born there.

What's the point of humans? So far we've only had a negative impact on this planet and almost every other species of life out there.

A lot of my customers are Somali and of all the different communities in Manchester that I deal with they are by far the most genuine and the nicest. As a generalisation of course.

Im sure there was a documentary on TV about the origins of man ,I cant remember what it was called but basically if I recall correctly man ventured from Africa and crossed over some river which wasn't as big at the time at the horn of Africa?? ,a bit sketchy but if it's true what the science bod's were saying they pretty much are responsible for all european civilisation

Wikipedia put it like this on the whats somalia good for web page

"of its great contributions are the religious development and civilization of mankind"

A bit of rather dull land in a very useful place whose few inhabitants were a little surprised when these white men arrived and said " you are now subjects of the king and he like these presents called taxes. Oh - and these chaps in funny shirts want a word with your priests"

Hundreds of years later its a bit fubared

certain UK health care professionals can earn 3+ times their salery working in Somalia as compared to the NHS!

Oh - and whilst they're not your traditional type, pirates are cooooooool (subject to being captured)!!!!

PS: its not easy being a pirate:

Another unusual revelation that Stig’s research has gleaned is that many Somalis enter into piracy to support their many wives – some have as many as 13! A common complaint he hears from pirates is how their family networks rapidly increase after they begin earning money from hijacks; unknown and distant cousins begin appearing at their doorsteps, asking for a slice of the profits.

There used to be a lot of Somalis working on UK ships as legitimate sailors rather than pirates. I guess they were cheap. All the ones I met were decent enough.

I suspect the opprobrium directed at the OP derives from the choice of language. The point of any country is to provide somewhere to live for its inhabitants, obviously, and I think Somalia does that like any other.

Asking what the point is comes across as being very derogatory.
