For a camera novice so mustn't be too clever of intimidating, but want to learn more about DSLR and photography skills. Classifieds would be useful too!

You could look at DP Review for a start. Lots of people on there who vary a lot in skills/experience. In my experience you can find some really good advice and a lot of picky pedants, so just like STW really. There are forums for all major brands of kit, and specific ones for lighting, technique etc. Worth lurking around it at least.

It's pretty format specific, but http://mu-43.com/ is a very friendly place. So I guess less like STW then 😉 Not as busy either, but you'll get fast detailed replies about u43 kit.
