Mrs Monkey is going to be on maternity leave next year, so I thought I might pick her up a tablet so she's not tied to watching telly in the lounge, and she doesn't have to cart a heavy laptop around (we're one of those weird households that doesn't have a telly in the bedroom - or any other room).

Uses will be Netflix / Amazon / iPlayer etc, web browsing and reading via the Kindle app, so we don't need anything fancy. Weight (or lack thereof) is a major consideration, decent battery life a bonus.

I was looking at the Amazon Fire HD 8 which looks about right for a sensible price (the 7 looks a bit too much of a compromise though to be honest would probably be good enough, she's not overly picky).

Anything else I should be looking at? The Fire HD 8 is currently £90 quid without ads (though I'm hoping for a reduction on Black Friday) so that kind of ballpark.

Huawei tablets are good value. You could get the Mediapad T3 8" for £90, looks like similar spec to that Amazon Fire.

Though I think it would be worth going for the Mediapad M3 Lite for £140, would get you a better screen, faster processor, and more memory etc.

Cheers - I have a Huawei phone and I've been quite impressed, so that could be a good option.

Normally I'd be well up for upgrading to the next model up, but I know Mrs Monkey's usage and I think it's 50 quid we could spend better elsewhere. Like nappies.

I have the HD8, got it last Christmas when it was reduced to £50( with ads, they are only on the wake-up/lock screen so I ignore them, youtube can tell you how to disable them if you are bothered). It does all you want of it very well. It's light enough too, but the Amazon cases have a fair bit of magnet and metal in them and can nearly double the weight.

It's a five minute job to add the google play store app so you aren't restricted to Amazon apps. Screen and sound quality both very good, and battery life more than adequate. For me, it's a great little device, downloaded Netflix and iPlayer stuff is very handy on a long journey and I'm finally being converted to ebooks.
