Trying to get some LEDs for a fitting as the current ones are a bit dismal - can anyone recommend a good and bright LED G9 (doesn't need to be dimmable).

When last I looked it was about 500-700 lumens. But COB lights are better at casting light than multiple diodes.
These are what I bought:

but these are brighter:
You've probably got warm white (2700k) which is a soft glow like old fashioned bulbs, look for daylight (4000k) ones instead.
The daylight ones - I really don't liek the colour they emit. We have them in the bathrooms but not keen on them for living areas.
