Me?

Whiplash.

Why? I hadn't much of an idea what it was about, all I knew was it was about a drummer.

Mrs MR wanted to see it so I went along for the ride. It was just solid, engaging, old-school film-making. And not an alien, CGI explosion or superhero in sight. Highly recommended if you like music and/or 'Rocky' type melodramas.

Edit: (Removed 'spoiler'-type trailer)

I wanted to strangle the trailer! And that 'You say tomato' [s]trib[/s]glibrute tap-dance scene I just watched on Youtube. Fred and Ginger must be laughing in their graves...

My brother said I had to watch A Million Ways To Die In The West, gave it a try expecting to turn it off after five minutes and am really enjoying it so far (about an hour in) - it's a bit Seth McFarlaney, crude and unsophisticated humour, but that's about my level, made me proper laugh out loud. 🙂

I'm a little biased, as the last film I saw was my own, but we had the premiere on Friday, and people bloody loved it

HippoTheMovie.com

So I guess the why for me, is that after seven years work, I'm fiercely proud of it. But the why for your average watcher? It's damned funny.

Arse, can't get the link to the trailer to work.

Rewatched Guardians of the Galaxy and Deadpool recently. Both excellent, can't wait for the sequels.
New films... Hidden Figures was very good.

Quite liked Margin Call - on the other night after the snooker and still on iplayer. One dodgy accent but generally pretty good for a slowy.

A second vote for Wilderpeople. A funny, poignant, well shot feel good film. The best I've seen in a while.

Hell or High Water. Top acting from Jeff Bridges, a good script that wasn't too obvious and some lovely filming.

Wow, what an eloquent and persuasive argument.

Oddly I thought Hacksaw Ridge was almost funny it was that bad.

There are clips of it doing the rounds for (completely unintended) comedy.

Have seen both Hacksaw Ridge and Deadpool. Funny, the overriding impressions I got were both crassly self(ie)-conscious films, but each in a very different way from the other. One was so shallowly 'wink-me-stupid' up itself that I couldn't find an honest laugh in there anywhere. The other was just unintentionally hilarious. I'll leave anyone to guess which was which! mileages vary etc.

Hunt For the Wilderpeople was exceptional, OTOH. Really good. Except for the fainting bit. They really need to edit the (unintentionally?) cheesy fainting bit out.

I feel old in that can't stomach much movie-cheese. Even (especially?) if it's wink-cheese, and repeatedly winks at itself and the viewer. Decades of it, and it's not slowing down! The '3rd wall' seems always to be blinking and vanishing now.

Saying that, I second 'Get Out' as an enjoyable romp. Had the feeling of down-to-earth 1970s Stepford Wives-type classic horror movie. Lead-character's facial expressions were hilarious throughout, I thought. The house-maid was brilliant too.

American Honey.

It is utterly, utterly brilliant. Think 'Kids' meets 'Easy Rider'.

Mixed feelings about that one.One sympathetic character and lots of hateful foul-mouth ones, with stunning cinematography - really splits the vote for me.

Quite enjoyed the journey, but I had to question what I was enjoying. But yes, memorable.

Glad you flagged that one though.

Drive.

Lovingly made pastiche that ends up feeling really fresh. Stunning cinematography, nice lean script, great performances and a perfect soundtrack.

I can finally see why R-Gos gets so much love.

Of course I've seen the film. Other people's comments "awesome", "damned funny" etc are at least providing some reason why they themselves thought the film was worthy of mention. You on the other hand validated your choice by a ranking, unless you yourself are the arbiter of the list of best films of all time?

A non answer which doesn't even covey one shred of your own opinion. But at least you told us that you saw it at the cinema, which I assume was nice.

To be fair One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest is a brilliant film. No need to be "the arbiter of the list of best films of all time" to know this to be the case.

Nocturnal Animals.

To avoid being sneered at by Muddyfunster, my reasons are:

-It features one of the most vicerally tense sequences I've seen in a very long time.
-Great performances, especially Aaron Taylor Johnon and Michael Shannon.
-Looks fantastic.
-Still thinking about the denouement, and can't decide if I liked it two weeks later.

To be fair, muddyfunster's contribution to this thread is moronic and best ignored.

I saw Guardians of the Galaxy 2 the day after Cuckoo's Nest and it was also a film.

'Kenny'(2006), 'The Castle'(1997), 'what we do in the shadows'(2015), The Grand Budapest Hotel'(2014) ...these are all cracking films and all very humorous. I must admit I didn't like 'I, Daniel Blake', it was just too corny for my liking and 'American Beauty' wasn't for me either, maybe I'm just a bit too old to enjoy it??

Predetermination - sort of put it all together before the reveal even down to her/him being their own offspring but enjoyable nonetheless.

I am a sucker for time travel films, tho...

These stood out for me:

Donnie Darko - Not without flaws and best served in the original ambiguous edit rather than the directors cut which spells it out for you. Sort of velvety pacing making up a sumptuous whole.

Pans Labyrinth - Spanish language dark fantasy that has not been bettered.
Falling Down - "get on the god damn horse"
City of God - Dirty and raw.
Black Swan - An insight into hysterical female obsession 😆

Holy Motors - French language, surreal, life is a performance eh.
End of Watch - Gritty cop thing with a pseudo docu style.
Fantastic Mr Fox - American adaptation, which splits opinion and probably appeals more to adults with it's dead pan tone.

Escape From New York - Dystopian Mad Max style Kurt Russell jaunt.
The Running Man - Whiffs of Rollorball, ridiculously cheesy on purpose, coming to a TV near you soon!

The Terminator - The original dark and nasty. No knee capping or child sidekick 🙄

Casino - Best psycho dwarf performance ever. Oh and baseball bat tenderising then buried alive.

Jackie Brown - Double crossing bizzle with most ending up dead. Tarantino's best IMO.

Che Parts 1 and 2 - Spanish language requiring commitment to watch it through. A passing interest in the subject matter is a must!

Wild at Heart and Mullholland Drive because......

As previously said just seen Nocturnal Animals, simply sublime if you don't look in a very stylish and beautifully made piece of art but with terror, suspense and incredible acting. She deserved at least an nomination for that.

+1 for lots of picks on here especially Whiplash and a lot of things chestercopperpot said.

As for a few movies that I knew little about prior to viewing but thought very highly of:

Dope - awesome. Kinda like Ferris Bueller's Day Off meets True Romance.

All is Lost - a septagenarian Robert Redford stuck on a troubled yacht all on his own. Totally riveting.

Marvellous - will make you laugh. And feel good. About everything.

@choppersquad - sorry mate, I have loved everything that Sacha Baron Cohen has ever done right from his early TV skits through AliG, Borat, The Dictator etc but when I put on Grimsby I watched for 30 minutes without even raising a smile and then switched it off. 😐

The trailer made me realise it was going to be bad, hitting the old gags years too late. Made me wonder if Mark Strong had a tax bill or something

Drive.

Lovingly made pastiche that ends up feeling really fresh. Stunning cinematography, nice lean script, great performances and a perfect soundtrack.

I think I got about a third of the way through Drive. Turned it off and went to bed, and never had much compulsion to watch the rest.

Escape From New York - Dystopian Mad Max style Kurt Russell jaunt.
...
The Terminator - The original dark and nasty. No knee capping or child sidekick

Two of my all-time favourite films there.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Loved it. Real feel good stuff with plenty of irony to chuckle at, and belly laughs at Psycho Jack. Jetpack!

Get out. Thought it was drivel, sorry.

Drive you get or you don't really.

For me it was two hours of Ryan Gosling not saying anything. It also made me think, "Why did they bother remaking The Driver?"

Two hours of Ryan O'Neill not saying anything - now that's a movie...

The Wolverine. Really good but not that new. Busting to see Fast and Furious 8 but understandably the wife won't go and watch it. My inner chav needs to see it - back with the early F&F films I was in full chav mode and we had a little 'family' of friends that grew up with the franchise.

The last one (7) where it was finished with special effects as Paul Walker died part way through filming was really good for me. Goose bumps near the end - effects were good but you could just tell Paul wasn't real.

Hell or High Water is excellent.

War Dogs was fun.

Rogue One was brilliant, better then VII for me.

Magnificent Seven I enjoyed.

I like Grimsby too, it's revolting, puerile and obvious, but it's still funny - one of the final scenes with the fan was worth it alone.
