I last visited pre internet in '92.

Multi month budget trip, southern India - Himalayan foothills kinda trip.

Open to train, motorcycle, bicycle, bus modes of transport.

What's it like these days?

Regardless of how it has changed, I have. After my trip to Leh this summer I am in no hurry to go back to altitude. Turns out my aptitude to enjoy it has reduced over time.

I went there in '13 and '14 so a bit out of date!

The trains are amazing, probably one of the best parts about going there and some of my best memories are the train journeys. Stupidly cheap too on the cheaper classes. Booked hostels via a couple of sites/ apps and that worked well.

Hired scooters when in Goa. No insurance obviously, dont want to think of the consequences of a crash. You'll see plenty of westerners walking around with gravel rash. I was one of them. I doubt the experience is much different in other states. Hide main stash of cash in the frame of bike, only have a little in a wallet in case you have to pay a cop "tea money". Scary as hell at times but a brilliant way to get around. Don't run police checkpoints by mistake as you leave Goa. Or again as you re-enter it. My travel friendly Caxton card wouldn't work everywhere which was a pain.

Go to Varanasi if you possibly can. It's otherworldly, sublime.

Booking trains online was a chore back then but it might be better now.

It was a massive pain in the rear to get a local simb card back then. It was akin to getting a bloody passport almost.

I'll say it again though, the trains are incredible and are not to be missed.

Im dead jealous, I want to go back again at least once in my life.

Guessing it's not dissimilar to last year.

Essential reading, regardless of whether you ever go to India or not.
