To cut a long strory short, girlfriend and myself have been trying to buy somewhere in the hope valley, but now possibly looking at expanding search area for normal budget vs requirements vs supply reasons.

now poss looking at chapel and have found a nice house (lots more for your cash) but don’t know the area, anyone live there and can shed any light?. Looking at the east side of chapel around hayfield road east if that helps

thanks

I think Chapel is a nice little village. Good train links into Manchester, and, obviously, amazing countryside all around.

Can smell a bit of brake pads from the factory though.

Train station is in a ballache of a location 'in' Chapel, though - think I'd prefer Whaley Vegas for that reason. Would happily live in either town, though. Nice size, amenities, location - not outstandingly scenic like some smaller Peak villages but they're pretty enough.

Chinley nearby worth a look if you prefer more of a village - on the Manc - Sheffield train line.

Yeah, I prefer Whaley, but it's a chunk more pricey than Chapel. And Chapel railway station is only about a five minute ride from the centre ya lazy bugger 😉

Chapel's OK, but Whaley Bridge is where the action is! There's a dual carriageway between the two for very little traffic so in terms of transport theres very little difference.

I'd almost go for Chinley ahead of Chapel, except that the trains on the Buxton line are a lot more frequent and nicer than on the Hope Valley line.

Disclaimer - I live in Whaley...

Chinley does have the train line if that's needed for the commute. It's all fairly nice there, and nice to ride around, road or off road.  My club mate used to live in Chinley and cyled to Hazel Grove and back on the commute.

Mate of mine moved there from Chinley a couple of years ago and likes it. It has pubs, restaurants, and a decent-sized Morrisons supermarket plus the usual small shops. The riding's good. Parts of it can smell of hot brake pad thanks to the Ferodo factory. Chinley is nice enough, but smaller again - limited shops, two good pubs, a cafe.

You get reasonably quick train access to Manchester one way and the Peak's your back garden.

I lived in Glossop for almost 20 years and if you don't need to drive into Manchester, it's another, bigger option complete with stuff like an M&S Simply Food, decent bike shop, Costa, Pizza Express, a choice of supermarkets. People get put off by the traffic heading into town, but the train is 30 minutes and the service is pretty good. I like it, place has changed a lot over the last ten years. Might be worth a look.

New Mills is like living in the 1950s. Whaley seems pleasant, but again quite small. Hayfield is weird in a tourists at the weekend / quite small sort of way with limited local facilities and no trains 😉

I guess if you're looking in the Hope Valley, you're more interested in the landscape and the outdoor vibe than the facilities though. Compared to the likes of Hope, Castleton and Hathersage, the towns over this way are probably a little more gritty, but great if you're into biking, walking, running etc. Less good for climbing than the central Peak, but there's still stuff around.

Whaley Bridge is where the action is!

Don't get me wrong, I love Whaley, I lived there for a year, would move back in a heartbeat, but, you clearly have an interesting definition of 'action' 🙂

Well, it certainly has no less action than Chapel, if you can believe such a thing, and if your desperate for a proper evening, Manc isn't really that far away.

Thanks for the input. I’ll be commuting to Sheffield and girlfriend to Macclesfield, so chinley and chapel are kind of on my outer limits at an hours drive (just!!) chinley possibly tips it in direct trains to sheff, however chinley station isn’t that far from chapel

Bear in mind that, if there's any decent snowfall, there's a strong chance that both you and her will be working from home, or not at all.

Over the Chinley side, you've also got Buxworth; little place, not a lot there but nice canal bit and great pub.

I'm in the process of buying one of the new builds right next to Chapel train station (Less than a 5 min walk to it).  Hoping to move in by the end of this year.

We're selling our first home in Hazel Grove.  You get waaaay more for your money around Chapel.

I work from home / occasionally Manchester City Centre.  The wife works and will drive into Hazel Grove (but can also work from home).

Riding / Walking / Trail running are all high on my agenda so I couldn't think of somewhere else I'd rather be.

Why not train it, and avoid the A6 Road To Hell? S'pose it depends what bit of the Grove she works in.

That’s an option for her too. We’re hoping once the new airport relief road opens that it might relive the A6 a little (will no doubt make it twice as bad somehow).

Train fares from chapel are extortionate though. I’m looking at £16.80 return into Manchester. Season ticket would be around £2,500. Tickets into Hazel Grove don’t come cheap either.

Edit - £10.30 return from Chapel to Hazel Grove.

Train fares are mental, aren't they...

Few points then:

1. Buxworth might as well be Whaley Bridge.

2. Train from Chapel/Whaley goes through Hazel Grove, train from Chinley doesn't.

3. If you're driving to Sheffield, the time difference from Whaley/Chapel/Chinel is pretty minor i.e. you wont notice.

4. GMPTE cheap fares stop at New Mills so the trick is to get on there if you're going towards Manc

5. The way to Macc from Chapel goes right through Whaley and is a bit congested in the morning so your missus might have a view on that...

6. Chapel is rubbish and Whaley is ace (sorry r8jimbob, but you'll soon find out!)

Ah but the level of Ace will increase significanly when I move my Ace self to Chapel.  Thus meaning that Chapel is ace the most.

Given that Whaley's ace-ness would have dropped when I moved out, the man has a point.

I'm expecting gridlock at the end of my road in High Lane!

Good wine shop in Whaley, and a good Italian restaurant
