I go for a second hand iphone 4 (4s if your lucky), plenty of them come up on the classifieds.

M8 bought an Moto G for his son, well impressed, and he was comparing it to his iphone 5... my iphone 4 is getting long in the tooth and feeling it.

Lumia 630 or 635's are getting great reviews. Both running latest version of windows 8.1. Had my lumia 920 coming up to 2 years and like windows phone enough to keep the phone for longer.

Motorola Moto E might be a better bet - cheaper (£90) and can add up to 32Gb memory; can't add memory to the original Moto G, although I must admit I haven't found this to be an issue (I have an 8Gb unlocked Moto G).

I have an iPhone 4 and Samsung S4.
The S4 is a bloody awful thing and was the stupidest upgrade I ever did.
I hear it won't work with iOS 8 but that''s fine, don't upgrade when the time comes.
The processor is quick enough. The camera is not amazing but apart from that it's fine.

The Moto E is a bit of a bargain, you can get one for about £60 on PAYG (see Virgin Media). Plus £2 for an unlock code on Ebay, then use it with any SIM. It is a decent screen, and latest version of Android. Though it is pretty basic - the camera is poor, doesn't have a flash.

Or the Moto G is better, but more expensive. The Moto G 4G version can take a memory card, but costs about £120.

Moto G is a great phone, the 4G version with micro SD card slot is pretty much a no brainer IMO. Know several people with them, and they're great.

Kicking myself I didn't buy one as a spare
