On the back of the Berlingo thread it looks like curtains for the V70 😓
2005 vintage with full leather interior, great car over the 163k miles but it needs an MOT in 10 days and to pass needs at least 4 tyres and some work on the hand brake, it's got a cracked rear light 😓 to. Apart from that it's sound but i can't throw cash at it as it's now a seat to small for the family and needs doing for a car with 3 proper rear seats.
What are my options? Wbac offer £400ish but I feel it's got more value than that of it could get the tyre's and work done cheaply

Ask McMoonter if he wants it!
Pretty sure he mentioned looking for a donor car.
Was thinking about doing the same with mine, similar vintage but still deeply in love with it!

Second hand alloys with tyres off eBay? Cracked rear light - eBay.

They look like they're fetching £1500 on eBay? I'd get the work done 😉

A set of legal part worns and a second hand lens and sell it privately with 12months MOT.
You will almost certainly get your money back.

It may need 'cash throwing at it' but it's all relative - any newer car is going to cost a lot more and any car of similar vintage is an unknown risk. A car of that age with only minor problems is a great thing to run. It owes you nothing but the likelihood is that it'll serve you well for many more miles.

Just because you fancy / need a new car doesn't mean you should chuck that one away.

Part worn tyres often come from the police, or other emergency services.
I’ve bought part worn tyres that look brand new minus the pimples.
Or just fit really cheap new ones to get it through the mot.
A car with mot that is drivable always has value.
Old volvos have value.
Estate cars have value.

The car also needs some brake work and a new light due to the crack

Are those extra things definitely an MOT fail?

Hand brake will be the silly H-bars between the shoes for the hand brake. You can get a set of phase 1 adjustable ones off of eBay for £20. Makes a world of difference.

Part worn tyres usually come from Germany where there's a 5mm limit (i think) on wear.

new light due to the crack

A crack in a light cover is not a fail unless it distorts the beam or forms. A sharp edge.

The have brake certainly is as it does nothing after seizing on during lock down and when I broke my leg
The light I think is
Plus an intermittent steering angle sensor throws up a code of you park with the wheels not straight

Why do you care about part worns if you are selling it? Unless you buy a brand new car, the replacement you need will also come with part worns...slightly less chance they've come off a crash damaged car...but other than that you won't know if they've been driven whilst flat, kerbed or had a repair outside the repairable area.

The tyres must be in a pretty poor state if it NEEDS 4 new ones anyway. I'd certainly be getting it fixed and MOT'd and sold...unless I was having to cover high labour charges to get the work done.

The other option is let it fail but at least that gives the buyer a good idea that it only has those specific problems to budget for.

Another tyre idea; My wife hit a massive pothole, wrote off two alloy wheels and probably the almost brand new tyres as well.

I went to a scrap yard for two new wheels thinking I would get two new tyres to fit to them. The scrapyard had about 30 wheels that were suitable and I started looking for the ones in good nick. The bloke helping me then found one with a premium tyre in good nick. He said the price was the same for a wheel irrespective of the tyre on it. A few minutes later I had two good wheels/tyres and he then inflated and balanced them for me.

£100.00 all in. The wheels were almost perfect and the tyres were similar.

Just get the stuff fixed.if lights are expensive then you can probably get cheap copies.tyres don't need to be top of the range.a local mechanic or you can probably sort thr rest.it will probably last ages and that mileage is nothing.it will sell better with an mot too and your get a good price.id just keep it

Why do you need time. Also I think mot centres might still be busy due to covid extensions although that have cleared up. Order a light.order the bits off ebay.tske them to a local garage who can fit them and mot it.dont get scared about a garage fitting online parts as there can be a registration parts checker on most sites.ebsy will just have a list.even that should be enough.does not take long.

I look at it this way, it’s still a decent car with minor wear and tear fixes needed, so the eco answer is to pay forward by fixing it and moving it on as a useful thing, the fixes and time needed might add up to 4 hours work , and the value will increase by a minimum of say 400 , so it’s 100 an hour to pass on something useful to someone, or make sure you move it on to somebody who can reap similar rewards. Any money it makes could get you a better version of your 3 seater, or pay 2 years maintenance or decent tyres and a shine or 2.

£160 plus fitting for 4 x Three A Chinese tyres
These are some of the best Chinese tyres on the market and i have done 10s of thousands of mils on them no bother.
Handbrake cables, got a set in my garage if your sure they are seized. ( they wont be it, it will be the T bar beneath the lever with 1 side disconnected or seized H bar in the drum)
New Pads £17 Apec local fators , New spring kit optional but i would £9 plus some cpper slip

You could quite easily have just as much work to do on a modern car come mot time unless it's very new.dont just look at the monetary value unless you are defo going to sell it.look at the value it has to you as decent cheap transport.

Sold my 1999 v70 mot failure for nearly £500 couple of months ago, ebay was a nightmare of scammers and non paying winners, took about 5 week’s to shift it to a genuine local bidder.

Our 2004 V70 is having a mid life makeover at 190k miles. The steering rack is leaking so is coming off and getting rebuilt whilst is off the road the bumpers are being removed and repainted, the driver's seat bolster being repaired, the front wheels repainted, full gearbox flush and a load of genuine and OEM driveline, steering and service parts going on it.
Great car that does all we ask of it so we would only replace it with another hence spending and doing the work on ours (I have indoor workspace and have always spannered my own vehicles).

Some V70's have a third row seats in the boot where the drug smuggling secret stash tray lives - wouldn't be hard to get the bits you need from a breakers.

I have a good contact at a Volvo dealer that does discount/decent prices for genuine Volvo parts.

Adjusting the handbrake is easy if the cables are free. The trim comes off at the handbrake lever and you turn a single 10mm nut.

Mine in on 206,000 miles and I’ve just had to order new cables. It seems a faff to fit, centre console and rear seats have to come out. All DIYable. There are videos on YouTube

Tyres are consumables.

Keep it going, you’ll have years more life out of it

You can get an extra couple of seats to fit in the boot to add capacity from a breaker.

It's not the cables its the drum that seized. No adjustment in the cable any more

If you remove the cd case under the central arm rest iy is very possible 1 cable has come away from the yoke. They rely on the spring tension in the drum to keep them connected
Not saying it will be that, but 10 mims of faff will let you know
7 seats are built on tje same floor plan so shouldn't be an issue
Fitting shoes, 20 mins each side. Use a long blade screw e driver as a lever under the hub to extend the spring and slot it in to place

If time is an issue, bear in mind that buying a replacement will likely take a significant amount of time.
I may be a bit biased as I've just bought a v70, and I bloody love it.

I love my v70 but as I've said the seat issue is an issue. Seats in the boot means I lose the boot and crumple zone?

Ah they cracking cars i picked up a gem of a car 2 years ago 1 owner from new (1999 vintage) and 2.5Tdi, i love the car great for traveling to work as so damn comfy, also as the seats all fold flat including the front passenger can get loads in for tip runs and it swallowes the bike no prob. A bargian for someone with a bit of work for sure!, if not it be snapped up on ebay!

PSA - anyone with an older Volvo, next time you jack the front end and have the wheels off have a good look up inside the suspension turret. This is where rust gets hold on these cars despite being galvanized and kills them.
Fertan, POR15 and Dinitrol it.

neglected to realise the extra row of seats toued above are rear facing so that is rued out - plus the reason for the extra seats reqd is a 3rd child needing a child seat. With siad child comes LOADS of stuff - with an extra row of seats occupied y a kid in the crumple zone means the boot is redundant

Fix enough issues to get it through MOT, sell for a decent wedge.

Or

MOT and see what other issues crop up and sell based on that plus £50.

All us v70 fanbois are wasting our time. The OP has made his (her?) mind up which is obvious from the drip fed negativity. Started with just '4 tyres and a light' then each counterpoint was countered with a new revelation.

Get rid and buy whatever suits though I'm not sure what will given the need for 3 rows of seats and luggage. A mini bus?

@boblo, the negativity isn't drip fed its as i remembered. I love my V70 and would keep it for ever if it were suitable for my family. My question was initially what shall i do with it - i.e.how do i move it on. Not stated i NEED 3 rows of seats anywhere, i need 5 seats hence the berlingo thread and space for kid based attire like a pram etc so need a boot

@boblo from the OP for clarity - i have emboldened the important bits so you don't miss them

it needs an MOT in 10 days and to pass needs at least 4 tyres and some work on the hand brake, it’s got a cracked rear light 😓 to. Apart from that it’s sound but i can’t throw cash at it as it’s now a seat to small for the family and needs doing for a car with 3 proper rear seats.

Yeah thanks for that summary. It did get a bit drip fed (you have to admit) and it came over a bit as 'yeah, yeah but what about this other thing I've just thought of...'.

I think you said you needed 3 child seats as well which usually means not across a 'standard' rear bench seat as they're not wide enough for x3? I'm no expert on kiddie seats tho so it sounds like either an extra wide car, an extra row of seats or the adult not driving taking the bus 😁

Sorry if you think I was having a pop at you but it really sounded like your mind was made up as you shot each suggestion down.

Got £375 via eBay for my non-running 05 V70 a couple of years ago. Injector had gone on the #5 cylinder and it had quite a few other issues. Local garage told me that Eastern Europeans like them as the labour to fix it up is cheaper back home. Mine is now somewhere in Lithuania..

Mine had rear parking sensors. I still reversed into a wall... 🙄 Coincidently it needed a new tail light - new boxed OE from eBay at £100 and a bit of bumper fettling/spraying at £150 cash (ahem). Bolleux. It didn't survive the £3k auto box repair and was traded in. Shame, I really liked it 😢

Sell it for the £400, move on and buy a new car. Whether you think it has more value or not is irrelevant if you’re not in a position to do the things that need doing to achieve that value.

Buuuuut if your ‘new’ car is actually a cheap high mileage banger, you may find yourself back at square one of course.!

Are you sure you cannot fit 3 child seats in the volvo?  It's one of the few cars with a flat-ish rear bench, and nice wide central sections for seats.   Though in fairness, space to fit the seats, and then room to actually get your hands in to do up the seatbelts between them are different things.

It would be on my list for a car once my SMax goes, but I need something newer that are available now.

The kids are:
Newborn - BIG seat
Toddler - 2 booster seat with back as he's a big lad
Oldest - 11 (but small) booster seat - even 2 booster seats and a baby was a struggle a few years ago with actually having space to do seatbelts up

My brother managed fine with 3 kid seats in his volvo. At 11 your oldest isn’t going to need a booster for long, just tell him to squeeze up a bit. I have a 2003 v70. When it goes to the garage for mot all the mechanics rave about them being great bombproof cars.

Surely the 11yo doesn’t need a booster/ won’t need it for long? Then they go in the middle, especially if they’re small.

The guys who run the car parts shop and always have some cars for sale? Hindsight is easy but regardless of the trader bit you should still send off (or better now do it online).

I think all it means in this case is easier for whoever nicked it to sell on. No risk to you I can think of. If you have a photo of v5 you can at least tell dvla you don’t own it?
