Right...

(Well, I don't want to start with "So...")

Supposed to be visiting friends this evening and staying the night so we don't have to worry about driving home, babysitters, messing dd's night routine, anxious, anxious etc etc.

Our friends are a couple with a little fella a few months older than ours. Her sister has a lad around two with whom they spent the day on Christmas Eve. Her sister lives in Wales (Cardiff). The two year old came up with a dodgy rash for which they took him to doctor. The doctor didn't know what it was but (and I suppose, this being South Wales) sent a swab to be checked for measles. The two year old displayed no other symptoms of measles (which as far as I can ascertain from the NHS website, are so clear, that swabs don't normally have to be taken). All the same, the doctor still did send a swab/blood test (not sure which) off to be checked, the results of which aren't back yet of course. 🙄 In the meantime, the two year old is absolutely fine and hasn't been ill at all.

Back to our friends, she has had measles in the past, he hasn't but went and had a vaccination jab straight away. Their lad hasn't been ill at all.

Obviously, they told us the other day to let us know. After doing a bit of "research" 🙂 (NHS website, no other scary ones, honestly!), I decided it would be fine to go. Another couple with a wee fella a few months younger again than dd have now said they're staying away. 😕 Now I've got the heebee-jeebees.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not normally an anxious ball of panic when it comes to stuff like this but I'm not really sure what to do now. Go easy on me... 🙂

Has your child had the MMR?

If so why wouldn't you go?

Unless your partner is pregnant and hasn;t been vaccinated?

I'd image lower case dd is too young to have had the MMR yet. I think its only given to very young kids if they're thought to have been exposed to measles.

Not a medical point of view but if the point of the trip is to enjoy yourself and you don't think you can enjoy yourself then don't go - there are plenty more bank holidays and weekends in the year

Now I've got the heebee-jeebees.

Can't believe you didn't get vaccinated for that though. Jesus, some people are so irresponsible. After the tragic 2011 Somerset Collywobbles outbreak I can't believe people are still refusing to get the HBJB/CW combined vaccine.

Also, if he's young and chest feeding then immunity is passed on that way, I believe?

Has your child had the MMR?

You'd think any decent OP would have included that information. See how anxious I am?? 🙂

No, as he's not yet 13 months, he hasn't had the MMR.

See my post on page 2 here DD. http://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/what-will-you-be-doing-on-nye/page/2

Personally, I wouldn't risk it. They be other nights for celebrating / New Years. Sorry to be so negative but if you've read that you'll see my current frame of mind is heavily weighing on this post.

I would stay away because I had measles as a youngster and it wasn't fun and it affected my eyesight. Spots in the eyes wasn't fun.

How long since the rash appeared? Any other symptoms?

Vaccine from breast feeding isn't massive it's just a few antibodies that are transferred hence why they vaccinate

Ultimately it's your kid if you don't want to take the risk then don't.

[b]If it was me, and this applies for pretty much every situation, I would agree with the wife.

the risk is low tbh but the consequences potentially high

Just wait till they go to nursery and school and they catch everything anyway

@Drac, the 2 year old had a rash on Christmas Eve and NO other symptoms whatsoever before or since. Which is why everybody is sure he doesn't/didn't have measles. (There's a word for something which presents so similarly for everyone, that it's easily diagnosed but I can't think what it is... 😕 )
