Looking for a new long winter jacket, currently wear a Barbour with some quilting and it is looking a bit passed its best.

Ideally needs to be long, waterproof, warm and maybe with a hood.

What does STW wear?

Hillwalking waterproof with a selection of fleece for underneath, depending on temperature.

^^This, unless its really cold and I'm anticipating lots of standing around e.g. at the rugby, then I have a Craghoppers parka that's very warm and also waterproof - only thing about it that's not 'great' is the hood as its not adjustable, but for £40 I'm not complaining.

I am happy with my Paramo Alta. It is not quilted, but it is warmer than a normal shell. So maybe worth considering. Oh and the hood is good.

Frahm, very expensive, but very nice :

https://frahmjacket.com/products/ventile-thermal-field-jacket

I have both of those and they have replaced pretty much everything else for daily dog walks and weekend wanderings

Clearly I'm the cheapskate around here, I have a Regatta parka that's still going strong!

Although I like the look of @simian Didrikson

Whereas I persist with the fleece and waterproof, but add lovely warm baselayer top & longjohns, and over trousers, merino socks and toaty warm hat, buff and gloves.
It ain't sexy, or even hipster beard compatible, but I'm rarely cold.

I use an extra long Ziener ski jacket, cosy not too heavy and waterproof. It's made in Vietnam but I suspect your favourite brand's equivalent is too. I was given the original Barbours to wear when I worked at Welsh Water - heavy, stiff when cold, not especially warm, if proofed enough to be waterproof made a mess of anything I sat in.

I have a Uniqlo down parka which is very warm and very water resistant, but I go for the GoreTex jacket with merino and other stuff underneath if it's sustained rain.

Just washed/reproofed my three year old Berghaus Arran jacket, as it was looking a little grubby. Comes with a removable fleece, for colder weather, so still useable in the more moderate months. It been in use as my main work (or smarter) jacket for the whole time and shows no signs of wear (ok, the hook loop has torn slight), well worth the money I spent on it. Also keep spotting ppl wearing them, and am surprised its still a current model jacket, which to me suggests it's a well rated/regarded.

I'm a Paramo fanboi and have a Pajaro jacket, it has a thin lining but for proper warmth you need to layer up. I also have an old Velez smock which I love but it is too warm for most UK conditions (for me). For proper cold days where I'm not moving much (I have two boys who play a LOT of football) I have a Fjallraven parka.

Both expensive options but I tend to keep stuff for decades 🙂

Depending on the weather, a Buffalo Special 6 with a cheap Millets waterproof over the top if it rains, and a Helly Lifa as a base-layer has always proved adequate for extended periods outdoors. I don’t wear it as much now, since the change of ownership at work has meant we get a decent waterproof hi-viz with an excellent hood, that’s not insulated so it can be layered underneath depending on time of year.
The Buffalo is designed to keep the wearer warm if it gets wet, but chucking a £20 fold-up jacket over the top makes a huge difference - even if it leaks a bit, the Buffalo only gets damp on the surface. I used to wear mine ten hours a day, through pretty foul conditions right through several winters.

If the new job at work happens, then I won’t be outdoors anymore, which will be lovely in the winter, and I won’t fry getting into 40-degree cars in the summer!

Prefer the layering option as necessary, with one of these over the top: https://www.trespass.com/oswalt-mens-dlx-waterproof-jacket#color_code=Black. No idea where the RRP comes from but think I paid £100ish a few years ago. Some sizes on Amazon for £100 at the moment. 20K waterproof and 10K breathable, smart enough looking, good zips, brilliant hood. Perfect for walking up for the school collection:

Not very waterproof, though that doesn't matter but I just spotted Patagonia have some DAS parkas on sale now... if I hadn't bought a belay jacket a few months ago I'd snap that up

I refute the insinuation of being a hipster due to my beard (which in the grand scheme of things probably barely constitutes the meaning of the word)...I have no corduroy or wax cotton jackets, nor do I 'groom', and I don't like cloudy beer, its was just a nice, big, warm coat. 😉

iainc - Frahm; I like the look of them but, as you say, expensive.

I always just wear a waterproof or other shell (a waxed cotton Fjallraven single layer job to at least claw back some STW cred) and as many layers on underneath as needed, which has yet to be more than two.

It's much more econonomical because the jumpers can be worn at other times and the waterproof also works in the spring and summer when it's raining.

Not long bought an Alpkit OHiro to replace my old Berghaus. Light, warm and seems pretty robust (although TBH I only really wear it for being outdoors on duty at school). Possibly not waterproof enough for the OP (5k/5k) but might be worth considering - certainly good enough for my use case.

I have one of these, bought for standing at bus stops in winter but I no longer do that.

If you're a size small and interested I'm open to selling for a decent price. Hasn't seen much use.

This thread prompted me to get my Buffalo out of the wardrobe and wear it into town today. Definitely a chill to the wind, and it started drizzling on my way home. All I had on underneath was a Uniqlo cotton tank-top and a tee shirt, and I was perfectly warm and comfy, especially as I was carrying a very heavy rucksack on my way back - anything thicker I’d probably have been sweaty as heck.

Frahm, very expensive, but very nice :

Thermal Military Parka

Ventile Thermal Field Jacket

I have both of those and they have replaced pretty much everything else for daily dog walks and weekend wanderings

I really fancy the Military Parka in American Tan - I really don't fancy waiting until November for it though. How was your buying experience and how do they size up? Lot of money to pay and get it wrong

The guy behind Frahm is Neil Hussey who founded Vulpine.
Same approach - good design, technical fabrics.
They carved out a niche for themselves but then...crashed and burned.
I'm not saying that means anything.
I wish them good luck and am considering whether or not to buy.

Superb experience and proper personal attention from Nick, who heads it up, and his partner. Sizing is true and they will help out with any sizing queries and swop out anything to suit.

Cannot sing their praises enough. I’ll drop nick a copy of this thread.

More than the £600 safety jacket?!?

I have a decathlon hooded fleece that cost £20 that's super warm, throw on a ME waterproof if it's windy/wet.

My Paramo adventure smock as a zip went and after over 10 years of massive use it felt like it needed replacing

I think I not have a Alta 2and it’s just fab.

My son has rab winter belay jacket which looks great saved he loves. He won it in a raffle. I think it’s a generator

OP, I’d just get the Barbour refurbished by Barbour. OTOH if you really want a new coat then Orvis do similar to Barbour but more expensive.

Ventile coats are delightful. I had 2 or 3 of the Howies Pilot jacket when they made that. Problems with Ventile I found were: expensive! not long lasting - the very fine and tightly woven fibres abrade on the cuffs and contact areas rapidly. It also creases and fades on those creases fast, giving it a ‘worn in’ look quickly. There are a few companies in the U.K. making coats from Swiss-made Ventile that can provide them quickly. Typically they have a ‘country’ styling.
