..making a frame for an aluminium sculpture/model?

I've used oak on the last few I made but I'm going to be making a big version of the Malvern Hills and want to put some nice wood around it.

Here's what the oak looks like:

Was thinking maybe black walnut might be good.

Any thoughts/recommendations?

Rosewood

London Plane

Zebrano

Purpleheart

Ebony if you're feeling spendy

Bog Oak if you're feeling a bit archeological

Do you do the sculptures to order, btw?

Nice, thanks. I'll look into those..

I've only got the mapping/data for the Malverns at the moment. I did look into doing other areas but not something I've looked into for a while now.

I'm a fan of the blandness of Ash - would go well with the metal IMO. Many like Yew.

Depends on the setting a bit too.

What about wood from trees that grow locally/native to the area?

GB-ATB

Add sycamore to that list. Similar wood to plane IIRC.

Beech, birch, ash, oak, "standard English deciduous woodland" type species all covered already.

I don't know of much in the way of coniferous forest locally. Probably some plantations around but they wouldn't be native?

That's fine, I was thinking of Malverns anyway!

Balsa is very easy to work with apparently.

Just finished machining the big one....700 x 150 x 30mm:

Once I've sorted out the framing I will, hopefully, be selling some..

keep us posted please!

how big was the small one?

Balsa is very easy to work with apparently.

It is indeed but its chief attributes are very light weight (no wood is lighter) and strength/weight ratio. However, sorely lacking in hardness for furniture type (yes I know, it's a display piece) work. Grain is ok, but other stuff is nicer looking.

The small ones were 400mm x 100mm.

The big one has gone to the framers (my bro-in-law) so should have it back this week 🙂

Then going on display at the local theatre..

700 is a bit bigger than I'm looking for.

If you can do the 400 x 100 metalwork at a reasonable price I will have your arm off (as the saying sort of goes).
