I saw a thread on here a couple of months ago about a good place to get a laptop from but I'm buggered if I can find it by searching.
Anyone got any ideas for a decent laptop, don't mind if second hand if good, for around the £400 mark?
Regards
Richard

"What computer" is as wooly as "what bike" or "what car." Without something more to go on beyond "a good one," there's literally nothing on the market which doesn't meet your criteria.
I only have a budget of £400 and would like to get the best value for money I can, my old laptop has a fault which means the mother board overheats and shuts it down and the power pack has broken so am just looking at getting the best value and most future proof computer I can for my money.
To do what?
General computing, Internet surfing, a few spreadsheets , I had a blu ray player in my last one so it was used a fair bit through the TV, my lad does a fair bit of gaming, but I'm not expecting it to set the world on fire at this price level.
Looking through a few Web sites the £400 mark seems to get an i5 1tb which would be perfectly adequate.
The over heat fault on you current laptop? Is it gettin hot, then shutting down & you saying its a m/b issue? If so have you tried cleaning the cpu exhaust vent (can of compressed air - pop the bottom cover off, & blast it out, not into the computer). Might get it going again, so you not so rushed into a decision.
Zippy it's a known fault on the board, looking on eBay at the same model sees loads of them with the same issue.
I stripped it out a couple of years ago as I had to replace the key board and I cleaned it all up then, but it wasn't too dirty.
Fair enough. To last a few years I'd want an i5, 8gb ram & an SSD hdd (500gb), though you may have to extend your budget a little to get that. Or get the i5 & plan to replace hdd with an SSD later on.
Dell outlet is alway mentioned on most threads, & check out the computing section of hot deals UK for deals
Thanks for a few ideas Zippy, will check those places out. My Wife has a lovely Samsung i5 with ssd it is pretty quick, but she won't let the kids use it...
my lad does a fair bit of gaming,
A gaming laptop worth its salt will be very expensive. For a decent gaming rig you're much, much better off with a desktop. (Or a console.)
I pretty much came to the same conclusion after wandering round looking at computers on Sunday, ivebtasked my lad with a £250-£300 budget to see what he can come up with by building his own desktop replacement ..
