Hi Kid Cragg
It's an Omega Planet Ocean with the rubber orange strap. It's very similar to the watch that Captain Flashheart mentioned but without trying to make him look like a snob, he'd be more likely wearing an Omega than a Tissot. He's quite often got luxury timepieces on his wrist and remember reading somewhere that he's quite the aficionado. All of the Top Gear guys regularly wear nice watches - Rolex, Omega, Tag Heurer etc etc.

Luxury watches and fast cars... we can dream!

You can do that with any watch though. Just bisect the angle between the 12 and the hour hand to give you a North-South line. Depending on the time and the hemisphere you can determine which way is North.

99.9% Tissot. I have one.

He wears Breitling a lot, but I think a Tissot T-Touch is correct in this case.

Clarkson usually wears an Omega Planet Ocean. May wears Rado, an Omega Railmaster and probably a few other things too.

It's the tissot. I have one too. Minus the garish orange strap though.

The orange is a but ott and they look better in black. Had mine for 8 years now and still looks new, very hard wearing.

The altimeter is shite but the weather forecast and compass are excellent.

@CaptainFlashheart, accept my apologies. I haven't seen the episode in question, I was merely going off your link as I have seen him in the Omega I mentioned in the same colourway previously and thought it may of been that.

Anyway... I'd have either. And I'd also travel around Africa in a battered old estate! Lucky sods!

I like mine but then again I like orange! Battery died 2 or 3 days before the 2 year warranty expired and it was refurbished / replaced by "Swatch" FOC.

They also fixed one of the T Touch features. I can't remember which because I dont use them anymore but it was apparently a common issue with the watch.

I've got one, the "Tony Parker Special Edition". No idea who he is, I just liked it and was in the mood from treating myself after surviving the Haute Route sportive.

I've always liked the T touch ever since seeing Brad Pitt wearing one in Mr & Mrs Smith. But I only wear a watch for work so can't justify the price of one.

I'm surprised he didn't want an orange strap too, to match the basketball.

Got a t-touch titanium with Tesco vouchers as they usually do a 4 for 1 offer around Christmas. £100-150ish will get you one from Goldsmiths.

I tried one on a couple of years ago as I wanted a sea dweller but they replaced it with the Deepsea; absolutely massive! So nice but I could have worn it round my upper arm and it would have still looked big!! Went for the sub no date instead.

@MikerTroid
Yeah, there's a guy who comes into my work who has one and its so bloody big and heavy. I have a Breitling Montbrillant Datora which is on the large side, but the Deepsea dwarfs it. Submariners are a lovely piece of kit, next on the watch list is a Sub date.

No, footballerists wear bloody ugly watches, usually costing the price of a good house or a stupidly expensive sports car, and which are almost impossible to read the time on.
Still prefer my Seiko, although I've actually found a G-Shock that I like, which will be my work watch.

Why are expensive watches often so massive? I know a few people who are 'into' watches and having tried their watches on, they are invariably heavy, uncomfortable and ungainly. I don't get it.

On hearing a French politician saying that if one didn't own a Rolex by 50 one had failed in life, my first thought was "success is not needing a watch at 50". I have a Casio for those rare days I need to be somewhere on time which betrays another sign of success, not needing a mobile phone.

Only £21,260... 😯
Simplicity is everything:

Although, if I had the £1600 necessary, I'd like one of these:

Again, simplicity is everything, it's the KISS principle.

The only G-Shock that has got me to actually spend money on it:

Loving simple watches here too but why so are many posh watches full of needless dials and other bollocks?

Really like the Swiss Rail style of Mondaine. nice and clear, not too thick, no teasmade, perfect.

It's a 'Spork', or Seiko SRP043k1. No longer in production, but if you hunt around the interwebz, you can find them.
That one is actually identical to mine, it has a 24mm Hirsch strap, hand notched at the ends to it between the pillars, a bugger of a job that took me two hours of careful phaffing around to get the strap to fit!
It does fit my wrist better than the stainless bracelet, though, and is more comfortable.
I regulated it myself, took several goes, but after three months it's currently around 12 seconds slow, not bad for Seiko's basic auto movement.
I love it to bits, it cost me around £350, new old stock, from a dealer up in the Midlands, with warranty from last July, when I bought it, with money left by my mum.
The other one is a 'Tuna can', lovely, tough watch, but too pricey for me, and newer ones are quartz instead of auto, which I prefer.

Surely that French politician should be aspiring to something a bit more special than a Rolex?
Maybe one of these: LM1
or these: T24

Any recommendations for a tough everyday watch (sapphire glass) & rubber strap. I was thinking along the lines of a Traser but was wondering what others think?

What price bracket? Citizen have re-introduced their Tough titanium watch, but it's now the Commando watch. The little Commando logo is a bit cheesy, but a damn good watch, it's the one Ray Mears always used to wear. About £250-ish, I think.
[edit] £299

That sort of price range. It looks pretty good, I like the simplicity I've got to say I love the simple styling of the 007 and the Spork above. What are they like toughness wise?

Anything tough but similar looking? Could go to £350ish but also happy to get s/h if there are any reputable sites about.

The only people that need expensive chronographs/diving watches are fighter pilots, civilian/combat divers, special forces types and astronauts. And preferably those who sport 1970's b-movie porn mustaches, so that counts Bear Grylls out in all his flaming queen metroness.

If you're not one of these you're a watch walt.

Probably something made from the tears of child blood diamond miners, with a strap made out of a critically endangered lizard.

The only uses for a chronograph on a regular basis are practically all military or aviation related.

Therefore my point stands, it doesn't even have to say "commando" on it.

I like to carry a fancy pocket knife at all times aswell.

If I'm out of the office, I insist on wearing my combat trousers. I can fill the pockets with tins of bully beef just incase my world ends.

There's a spork on ebay at the minute, here.
Very "wantable", i'm not one for watches but that is very nice indeed and plain looking.

The only G-Shock that has got me to actually spend money on it:

I'm wearing one of those and I also have a spare, brand new one for sale (work safety award). The LCD is a bit nicer on the newer ones.

Without the digital display I fear Hammond would effectively be wearing a man bracelet. To be able to navigate by sun and watch, it does pay to know what the big and little hand represent.

I quite like my Seiko, but I'd probably have been just as happy with a Skagen.

I've never understood the appeal of flash/expensive watches. Thinking about it, I've not worn a watch for about 10 yrs, and prior to that the most expensive was probably no more than £50.

My ex once took me shopping specifically to get a watch. This was only 2-3 months into dating and she wanted to spend IRO £1000. I just found the whole experience gross as nothing appealed to me + I couldn't see the point in blowing that amount of cash. Was bored after 5 mins but was "encouraged" to keep looking for another couple of hours or so. Needless to say I returned home empty-handed. ATEOTD a watch is a watch FFS.

So anyone know if the 007s are pretty tough? By that I mean very scratch / drop resistant.

Oh, don't start with that ridiculous defence.

A bike can be a finely tuned racing machine, at one with the rider. If you want to pose any sort of challenge at your local trail centre, then you need something upto the job at hand.

A watch just tells the time.

A watch just tells the time.

Very few people need a watch to tell the time anymore. The modern purpose of a watch has more to do with fashion than it does function.

Deary me, didn't you get enough hugs from your mummy or something? Do grow up. 🙄
The Spork's a very solid watch, quite heavy, but wears light, if you know what I mean. I've got pretty skinny wrists, but it doesn't look over-large on me.
The reason I've bought the G-Shock is that I occasionally have to operate machinery with lots of sharp corners, the last time I turned round and caught my wrist on a sharp machined steel corner with quite a clunk from the watch! No marks on it, but, while I don't mind general 'patination', I don't want to put a deep gouge into it, so a cheap Casio is going to be my 'shoving hands into machinery' watch. 😀

Count Zero, yup couldn't find any of the seikos-for good reason!

Funnily enough my work watch is the old citizen tough you've pictured above, sans commando logo. Brilliant watch! It was sold to me as the perfect watch to go to war in; it's done two!!
