I find it highly amusing where a bunch of blokes on a bike forum, where an entry level bike will cost roughly £1000, and will be worth a third of that in three years or so, sneer at someone who wants to spend the same on a wris****ch that could easily last forty, fifty or sixty years, and be worth far more than was paid for it.
I find it highly amusing that you want to infer that anyone is sneering. I suppose we all find our own amusement.
Any worksite I have been on bans all metal straps. If this is the case on yours then if you go that way it will sit in your pocket. If you get a leather strap it can get minging quickly....
What's the reasoning for banning metal bracelets? Safety?
Probably, one word - "deglove".
If you think about it you can imagine it. I would NOT recommend googling it unless you have a very strong stomach.
I've just come in from my construction site where the foreman was aksing me how much I paid for my watch (cheapest decathlon digital) because he thought it looked good. He's currently gone away to convert the 12.99 euros into CFA (am in Mali) to see if he can afford it and ask me to pick one up for him when I go home next week.
Then I come into my office and see this thread....puts things in perspective for me.
And if you think about the money lost on depreciation or pcp on the cars you see around*, makes bikes*** and watches** seem like reasonable expense...
*not cars like mine though, to be frank
**or watches like mine either on reflection.
***bikes like mine though, practically a bargain!
There's a name for people that wear jewellery;
women.

A £1000 bike offers far better performance over a £100 BSO.
An automatic £1000 watch actually offers poorer performance than a £20 quartz.
Obvious sbob is obvious.
Sbobvious?
I do miss my watch with paws for hands and ticking eyes if I'm being honest, but watches are now superfluous, obsolete.
Sbobsolete?
Or Skate for short.
Sbobviously.
Sbobsolete?
Are you here all week? (-:
As long as nobody sbobjects.
I find the assertion that watches are (sb)obsolete because we have phones to be a bit odd. It's all about convenience. The wris****ch displaced the pocket watch don't forget, having the correct time in your pocket isn't exactly a new invention.
TBH, I'd argue the opposite is true. If we could pack all of a smartphone's functionality in a watch - and we're getting there slowly - it'd be the phone which would become obsolete.
I'd be all over that, a watch with all the comms and a tablet for when you need a bigger screen, then we can consign these stupid "phablet" compromise devices to the scrapheap where they belong. In the future we'll look back on how we all used to carry big daft phones around with the same "what the hell were we thinking" retrospection that we'd have now for Nokia 5.1s and VHS camcorders.
Yes I know, can open, worms everywhere.
You're just being sbobtuse now.
S'bob on.
S'bob on.
S'bobbins more like.
S'bobbins more like.
Robert the Welsh refuse collector?
Jones the Dust isn't it.
I don't know, you get out of bed to gently rib the modern day dandies and an hour later it's descended into petty racism.
🙄
descended into petty racism.
eh?
S'not racism.
S'bobism.
petty racism.
The good kind of racism?
How does this thread end up here? This place is full of nut jobs.
Back on track....
A Sinn would be great, but the prices have rocketed recently, I doubt you'd get anything nice for anywhere near £1K.
I'd look at Oris.

There's a lot of milage in getting a cheaper watch for work and saving for something nice(r) which is what you'll end up doing anyway!
Thanks for the suggestions but I'm finding I much prefer chronos to diver style watches.I do agree about the prices , nothing even remotely nice is near my budget.
I bought a damasko which I wear for work. I do a lot of inspections on plant and machinery, I bought it for the fact it's tough as old boots.
Oh and only the top watch is a divers style, the second one is a pilots style. Chrono's will be more expensive, so you won't get as nice a watch for your money if you stick to that. Laco make some very nice quartz chromo's which are really cheap and actually really nice! A proper brand who make quality kit. This one is £225.

Check out Hamilton watches too.
Will do thank you.
We've had a CountZero weirdfontspace lecture! This thread has everything.
Not my cup of tea but have a look at Vostok watches and their chronos. Rugged, cheap, well regarded and available on eBay, Amazon etc quite easily.
I'd also suggest CWC although their price rises of late have been silly high but in budget second hand. Limited range though. You might want to make sure you get a sapphire crystal as anything like Plexiglas or hardlex will scratch up more easily.
The answer is still a gshock and a nice watch though 😉
I've just seen a gshock for £1400. That confuses everything!! I still like certain Tags. Carrera and monza and of course monaco. Even been looking at uboat which look a nice watch.
Sorry mate, I just don't get it....£1k on a work watch......what has the world come to.... 🙂
I'm sure you'll find what you want to though, enjoy!
Even been looking at uboat which look a nice watch.
Seriously?? They are hideous.
Apologies if you are a superhero or run a secret underground espionage agency so need to accessorise appropriately.
I'd second Certina, I've got a DS Podium automatic and it's very nice. I'm going to sell my Omega Speedmaster because I prefer the Certina.
If you're going to look at Hamilton watches check out Amazon, some real discounts around if you look.
Love Oris watch but they're a bit too big enough for my wrist. 🙁
I don't think you can go wrong with Seiko, again, easily find good discounts online.
Or, if you do find something you like in Beaver Brooks etc. don't buy from them, go to a couple of independent retailers and play them off against each other, a friend has just had just over £600 off a new Breitling where high St chains would even consider it.
I love watches and have several nice ones that live in their box while I wear my Fenix.
Shinola The Rambler is a cool chrono around you price range.

Shinola The Rambler is a cool chrono around you price range.
As in the same Shinola who use £5 quartz movements and have the cases made by Fossil, the same Fossil who make watches for DKNY, Michael Kors and Armani...?
If I'm spending 1k on a watch I want one made by a watch company, not some fashion brand outsourcing the manufacturing to to China and then making 50x margin on the rrp...
Seiko, Longines, Oris, Fortis, Glycine, Sinn, Damasko and Hamilton to name a few are all worth a look. If you're open to buying s/h and want a mechanical chrono then do a search for ETA 7750 or Valjoux 7750 on ebay. The 7750 is found in all-sorts and is a great Swiss automatic movement. Tag use it and call it their Calibre 16, Hublot badge it a HUB4100, Breitling refer to it as their Calibre 13 etc etc...
Plenty of options out there if you do a bit of homework first.
Longines hydroconquest are lovely.
I bought an Oris diver watches a few years ago. Still worn daily and working fine. It's rare I take it off to do something. Looks a little beat up now but that adds character.
Not sure what my next one will be. I like sea masters but they are quite popular and I've already got a divers watch so may go for a pilot watch - either Oris or IWC.
Keep an eye on here.. http://www.watchrecon.com/?country%5B%5D=United+Kingdom
Considered a vintage pocket watch? Much more intimidating if you are in some sort of overseer role.
You'd probably have a bit of money left over, which you could spend on a custom made stovepipe hat - in the shape of a Mont Blanc pen top.
Heh.
Cheeky.
I've had my sea master for 17 years now. Spent my entire first months salary on it from my first job. (I've never been great at budgeting) I'm not from the sort of family that has heirloom jewelry either.
I've worn it every day since, cost £750, probably spent £200 on repairs and servicing. The glass is still perfect, body has marks all over it. I've gutted 2 houses in it, built 3 campers, loads of cars, swapped engines, even, swimming in the sea 😉 . It's a seriously tough piece of kit. Highly recommended, in fact, pounds per wear, I'd say it's probably even approaching a bargain but I'll tread carefully on that point...
Have a look at Steinhart
See them here
As already mentioned £1 K is a funny price to pay I would either double it or go down to £200 mark
But What I would really do is Buy a smart Watch
Thanks guys lots of new makes to have a look at that I never knew about. Righog I have two smart watches already.
I decided not to go up to 1k for a watch and ended up with a tissot prc200.
Really comfortable and looks good too.
The shop staff asked if it was going to be an heirloom watch but my view is an heirloom is likely to cost more than a few hundred quid
look at Steinhart

fd3chris*, yesterday.
*ok it's actually me.
This thread reminds me of when I was a kid when the lads at school used to brag to each other about how deep our digital watches could go under water.
Mine will go to 3900 meters - beat that 🙂
Haha @ gofasterstripes. Mine are cheap basic ones 🙂 I am finding it's a minefield with so many makes and what is good to buy and what is considered junk. Now I know what a newbie on here feels like with the " what new bike for £?" threads.
If used then the best bang for buck is to go to Spring or Autumn fair at the NEC. It's where the trade do their forward ordering. The jewellery section halls 19/20 has a second hand high end watch dealer that sells at trade. My wife has her own business which is how I end up drooling over nice watches.
You have to be there first thing as all the nice desirable stuff is snapped up-i went looking for a particular Speedmaster but they went early.
It's easy to blag your way in-just create a fictional business name and pre register. Quite considerable savings to be made.
My choice would be a Rolex Airking for the fuss free option or a Speedmaster.
Mine will go to 3900 meters
Good luck getting that back.
^^^^^RE my pic - three Bali Automatic Omega fakes and a Casio Ediface, back when there was a smart one available.
The fakes kept perfect time, but all succumbed to water ingress eventually. For $40 a pop, it was OK.
It's always intrigued me as to how good some fakes are when people are asking £200+ and stating they have swiss movements etc.
Buy a fairly new used Steinhart or similar from eBay and you'll probably just lose postage costs and fees. Not a bad idea 'investing' £25 or so in trying the odd watch before you commit a £1k. Better still take your time trying a few on in a city centre dealers like Jura or Watchfinder and take it from there. Bit like bikes, they can look great but the moment you try it on it won't feel right.
Don't overlook lug to lug length which can be important along with how high it sits and on what strap etc (bracelets balance a watch with heft whereas they can feel top heavy with a leather, rubber, NATO etc).
Sorting on eBay and buying the seller is the cheapest route aside to joining a forum and investing some time to learn.
Thanks. I never realised there was so much to it. So many makes I like. I've seen a christopher ward motorsport inspired watch that looks good for not much but it's got a Swiss quartz movement and my whole reason was to buy a mechanical second hand medium quality watch. I've spent most of this wet wkd watch searching and learning.

Torgoen T18. Bought recently after having other watches stolen in burglary. Online only sales. Very quick service. Does incur import duty though. Way below your budget. There tactical watch looks quite good as well
does that match the dash in your mid range sports salmon/jet fighter?
Drive a van. Just liked the watch. Sorry it offends you
it doesn't offend me, on the contrary it brightened my day.
I really like the elliot brown crono, in blue c 500. I so nearly bought a n iwc crono but at c 4k for everyday use thought against it. Bought a used elliot brown off here, love it, dropped it in the gym last week and chipped the glass. Would have been gutted if it was a 4k watch, but 37 quid to get the glass replaced.
Have you guys seen this? Not into watches personally, but I thought some of you would probably enjoy this.
I like that Torgoen. Just been browsing through their website. Some nice watches on there.that video link made me smile. Lucky guy .

I like that Torgoen
No offence (to flibrose) but in that case you can ignore the bulk of my suggestions and get a Citizen/Casio for <£250. They do a lot of busy watches like that.
PS a decent Swiss ETA movement isn't so expensive but Swatch have restricted supply recently which is an issue. There's some very good clone movements meaning similar design to ETA but made elsewhere and similarly regarded. Always nice ensuring an independent watchmaker can service them rather than having to return to the manufacturer. Damasko don't supply their special rubber gaskets to anyone else but until recently they were all ETA mvts so could be serviced locally.
Nice piece on ETA movements
ETA info
:deepreddave: No offence (to flibrose).
Non taken. Each to their own. A watch for every occasion is what I think. But then again I only have one bike and it still has 26inch wheels so what the hell do I know.lol
For around a grand I'd look at Stowa, lovely watches for the money
"Mine will go to 3900 meters - beat that"
Mine will go to 5000 metres 😉
OCEANA ?
Yes righog, SINN UX...
