Adamski & Seal, killer was just on the radio.  (NTS)

I remember watching newsround  (just before neighbours) around 15 years old and they asked Tony Blair what song was number one in the UK. Being a stuffy old man, he didn't know. Well, I am now that stuffy old man.   What great number 1 singles have I missed since 1997?

Nobody knows anymore - they only know what they play most on their own Spotify!
Show me a list of the numbers ones and I'll tell you of the ones I recognise which are good

Checking out some of the videos is fun... Stormzy with a tiny umbrella.. DJ Khaled - utter crap, but has a woman on a horse with big bouncing boobs, so that promo method still works! and Post Malone "this video contains explicit content and graphic violence"! Quite like that one though. "I been popping pillys and f-in hos, man I feel just like a rock staaar" I don't think Mike Read would've approved.
They're mostly soft hip hop/rnb type stuff, as I expected.

I checked the list of number ones with my YouTube favourites and had to go back to 2013 to find something.

I liked the Bllie Eilish Bond theme so Feb for me.
My daughter loves Lewis Calaldi so that was Feb as well.
I didn't really like any of them in 2019.
Promises by Calvin Harris and Sam Smith in 2018

christmas 2009, rage against the machine for me.

I can't believe it's been over 10 years... Music has a strange way of ageing with me.

On one hand It's really hard to think that it was 10 years since that was No1, but not that it's been about the same time since Gordon Brown was PM.

In the same way, I wasn't a huge fan but I remember Uptown Funk was a big hit about a year or two ago, but it was actually 5 years ago. Bonkers.

Yeah that Weeknd one is good, Vossi Bop by Stormzy, that was good and a great video, and a special dance too. What more do you want? (The Billie Ilish one is okay).

Recently?
Tunes and I, Dance Monkey
Shaun Mendez and Camilla Corbello, Senorita.

Both cracking pop songs.
I'm not sure about the chart linked above, no mention of Dua Lipa, who has released a lot of great stuff in the last year.

That's a bit depressing.
Have to go back to 2009 for Rage Against The Machine.
For the last five years I haven't even heard of any of the artists.
I am truly old (49).

I’m 49 too. Some great pop music about. Stick the radio on and enjoy! Dua Lipa, some Ariana Grande. Taylor Swift is a fantastic songwriter. Lizzo’s got some great tracks. Tyler, the Creator is awesome, not really pop
Though. On another route entirely Tool drooped a new album last year. Gojira. SLIFT.

DezB and sadexpunk have each chosen the only two recent ones I can actually remember, RATM - Killing In The Name Of and Lorde - Royals. Before that it was t.A.t.U. - All The Things She Said.
I’d probably have to go back a bit further to find any number one hits I actually liked, rather than thought, hmmm, ok.
Oh yeah, Gnarls Barkley - Crazy, that one I really like.

As said, there is some great pop music still around, but the stuff that gets to number one now tends to be LCD stuff by the very nature of how today's charts are compiled.

I'd have to go 2013 to find one I'd voluntarily seek out to listen to (in fact it's on my go-to Google Music playlist).

Just compiled a list from the site Dez linked to, the hit rate for me averages roughly one a year as far back as 1984! I can’t be bothered to go back further but 1983 has a couple of Police singles, so I’ll set that as the point for me when the charts were actually worth paying attention to.
2001 Kylie - Can’t Get You Out Of My Head
2000 Eminem - Stan/ The Real Slim Shady
1999 Blondie - Maria
1997 Tori Amos - Professional Widow
1996 Prodigy - Firestarter
1992 Tasmin Archer - Sleeping Satellite
1990 Sinead O’Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U
Adamski - Killer
1989 Bangles - Eternal Flame
1988 Fairground Attraction - Perfect
1984 Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Relax/The Power Of Love

The charts went down the toilet when downloads were included, I couldn't name one no1 since that happened and couldn't care less either.
Top of the pops, the chart show, cduk, those were the good old days.
