Hi all,

I need some new walkie talkies - we use them ocassionally for biking, but mainly for multi pitch rock climbing. They need to be sold on amazon (we have some vouchers), robust, and as small as possible.

At the moment it seems it's a choice between the motorola T82 Extreme and the T80. The T80 is quite a few years older but gets good reviews, the T82 is much newer but doesn't seem to have as many reviews. There are a few reviews on amazon, mostly complaining about the range, but it's hard to know if they people giving the review are realistic about the range of PMR radios (i.e. it'll be short).

Has anyone got the T82? I'm edging towards it, as a) it's newer with the new additonal 8 PMR channels and b) charges from USB, so don't need to take the charging dock when we go aboard.

Boafengs or whatever they are called these days, you can get them cheap on ebay and they are great value.

We've just bought some Uniden UH45s, a three-pack, for the kids to use in the garden and for keeping in touch with the eldest when camping and he's running off around the campsite with his mates.

They seem to just work as expected, and are very small and light.

I've got a pair of Motorola XTL446's you'd be welcome to for postage; they're fifteen years old but in mint condition as they were only used once or twice soon after we bought them. (We bought them when my wife and I used to ride together, her on horseback and me on the bike - but we only did it a few times.)

Haven't a clue how they compare to current offerings and technology but I'd like to see someone get some use.

Househusband - thanks for the kind offer, but I sounds like Outofbreath is more suited than me 🙂

5plusn8 - i looked at those, and discounted them as they're a bit big. Still a little tempted tho.

Ewan, we have 6 of them now. Well two at home and four at work, but I keep them at home at weekends.
Have proven to be very tough and reliable. Rechargeable through the base or a little port at the top with a usb cable. Charge lasts ages. Seem to work over good distances.
