Got some shell fossils from the beach last week to add a bit of interest to the fireplace in my lounge.
I was thinking about varnishing/lacquering them to help show off the fossilisation better - good idea or keep it natural?
If so, any particular varnish/lacquer that would do the trick?

Soak them to get rid of the salt as it's hygroscopic, ie it attracts water on damp days. Let them dry completely. That's outside and in, weeks maybe. Give one coat of polyurethane thinned with white spirit, 50/50. When that's dried, one coat of PU matt.

Oh, try it on one first, in case soaking in water makes it disintegrate.

So what sort of rock then, shale? That might fall apart.
