Hi peeps,
I'm looking at buying a run around van for around £3k
Ive started looking on various sites but best advice allways seems to be sought on here 8)
So which do I choose? Doblo, Kangoo, Partner, Connect or something else.

It will be initially used for carrying a couple of people and 2 bikes

Thanks in advance

Vauxhall combo. Ex post office ones are very cheap. My mate paid 3k for his, 3 years old and 40kish. He looked at berlingos, partner, doblo etc and the combo was best for bike storage/fitting.

Connects seem to have a few problems , the neighbour has 2,

Postie vans usually need a new clutch/starter motor, due to stop start deliveries dependant from which depot theyre used by,

Doblo , plenty of room, fast and high roofline, inside above drivers seat,

Volkswagen over priced,

I regularly consider buying a van to replace the car and each time I return to the same conclusion ...Toyota Hiace. Granted they ain't pretty, but they are robust and very reliable.

Most modern vans seem to be nicely styled but suffer with poor reliability; failed dual mass flywheels, failed clutches, failed gearboxes etc. From what I have read the Hiace is about as dependable as a vehicle can be.

You should be able to find one with c125k-150k fully serviced for less than £3k.

Transit or Hiace.

do all your homework though, in every brand/model ther ewill be abused examples out there that polish up relatively well.

Does that come with a free copy of the Sun and a couple of old McDonald wrappers wedged between the dashboard and the windsheild, and "I wish my wife was as dirty as this van" written in the dirt on the rear doors?

if its only for 2 bikes and 2 people, is there a reason it has to be a van? 2 & 2 go into any regular estate car without any wheels off, 3 & 3 with front wheels off. If you got a mpv you could probably get half a dozen in there..

I have a doblo 'car' version. Seats up for carrying people and stuff, could have 5 people and 2 bikes with the wheels off, usually the back seats are folded forward and you can wheel 2 or 3 bikes right in with the wheels on, and have 2 in the front. With the single seat down you can have 4 people and 4 bikes without too much flapping. Had amazing weekends camping in it already, great fun to drive, sticks to the road like glue. Hard to work on yourself, filters are a pain to get at etc but supposed to be pretty reliable.
They are also cheap, my good condition ex mobility rad machine was £4k 08 plate with 25,000 on the clock.

Also has a tailgate, which is useful for cooking/sheltering/changing under in the rain.

And the main point, it really gets the chicks! Seriously, people are always commenting on its stunningness. Just the other day I overheard some sexy ladies saying 'WTF is that thing?? I would rather drive a Reliant Bond Bug'

ALL. OVER. THE. DOBLO.

Transit connect is a good van, we paid 3.5k for an 06 plate with 72k on the clock. Easy to drive cheap to insure and 45mpg. Oh and if/when it does go wrong the bits are fairly cheap and readily available.

Hi Dropoff. Who did you insure with?
Just had a play on gocompare and pretty much all at same price. Berlingo, Partner, T200 @ £500 +/- £50 full comp. And not much difference between social or Business type.

smudge , if you decide on a make/model.....
consider hiring the same for a week
i own a vauxhall combo 1.3 cdti (5 years)
you can easy get 3 complete bikes and a load of gear in
but it only has 1 passenger seat
dont think i will ever go back to a car
edit... i`m insured with co-op cis £220 fully comp
but premiums have rocketed so not looking forward to renewal quote :/

Is that with protected NCB?
Just had a play on gocompare and if I untick the protected NCB the premiums drop by nearly £160!

If it is only a 3K van you dont need fully comp as you wont get what you think it is worth even if wrote off .

I swopped from CIS to direct line as they were cheaper at the time .

Smudge, we use Commercial vehicle direct. They were the best of the bunch when I was looking.
