Just bought my first printer and trying to understand what will make ink cartridge last longest

if all the greys on a grey scale turn black, then grey scale should use less. if the grey scale is actually a black and white image like a word document, it won't make a difference. the best way is to print things as small as possible

use the "Draft" print setting for fastest and least ink.

Most printers come with the ink cartridges about a quarter full. That's why some printers cost less than the replacement cartridges.
