You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
So I've got one of these smart meters installed, and it tells me how much I'm spending per day on the electric. I'm not overly fussed at the cost (it's more than affordable) but I am interested...
Every morning when I get up, around 8, it's showing 60-64p used since midnight. By the time I go to bed (usually around midnight) it shows around £1.20 (unless I've used the washing machine etc). So, the first 8 hours of the day's electricity usage while I'm asleep costs the same as the next 16 hours while I'm up and about. I'm on a boggo-standard n-power tariff that I signed up to 7 years ago (cos life is too short to save 5p a day, sorry!)
During the night I'm not watching TV, using my laptop/speakers/2nd screen, not brewing the kettle or using the oven or toaster. The heating is gas (and not on anyway) and I don't have a leccy car.
So why is my electricity cost comparatively higher at night?
bump, cos its 2021 and forums are new technology 🙂
stuff still plugged in?
Standing charge and fridge
Hot water?
Fridge.
Anything on "standby"
Anything charging
Central heating timer
Smart meter
come to think of it i have 2 freezers: one in the house and one in the shed.
Check your tariff and find out what the standing charge is. Then subtract that from your morning reading and what’s left is what’s actually been used overnight.
My gas usage shows 13p every morning because that’s what I’m charged before even using anything.

You haven’t needed to do that for months.
Anyway.
Fridge, freezer, hot water, heating, tv on standby, phone charger and pretty much anything on standby.
Lights 😂
I'm afraid you have an advanced form of sleepwalking called "sleep brew making". Someone suffering from this rare disorder can sometimes make half a dozen cups of tea in a night.
I'm sorry you've had to find out like this.
Mains powered magic wand or other 'massager'.
Elves...
elves making porn films use huge amounts , especially if foxes are involved , they go on for ages
Elves use 4K cameras too and they cost more to run
Obviously your neighbour has sneakily attached themselves to your mains supply
In addition:
Outside light
Router
Leaks ( 😉 )
1.20 a day..... Or 36 quid a month.
Sounds to me like typical usage for a single gent.
Standing charge is 25-30pence
And a unit is about 18 pence ATM. So your using 1.7 units between midnight and waking up.
Your bills what mine is in summer as a family of 3 with me working from home with 2 laptops and 3 monitors many brews and the radio on. ......with 3.6kwh of solar on the roof.
We were 75 quid before that with all of us in the house 24/7
my dual fuel for the year is about £550 , that’s standard semi , for low users it pays to shop about for different tariffs that’s for sure , another great capitalist con trick , billing companies .......
You haven’t needed to do that for months.
Anyway.
Sorry, thread wasn't showing on the forum list after I posted. Must be me 🤷♂️
Standing charge must be the one! Didn't think of that, thanks 🙂
(all the things that are turned on over night, such as fridge and freezer are still on during the day......)
Yes yes, I should change my tariff. I should also change my phone, insurance, job attitude to monthly charges etc 😘
The new smart meter?
Espresso machine. Routers. Servers. Fridges and freezers. Car charging. Things on standby. Heating control system. Lots of stuff.
We had a smart meter installed. It stopped working after a few days.
Hitachi Wand.
Edit:FFS Frank got there first!
You haven’t needed to do that for months.
Constant assertions to the contrary would suggest otherwise.
Classic stw not reading the OP 😉
Question is why the 8 hours of night cost the same as the 16 hours of day, when I use more electric while I'm awake.
Standing charge must be the answer 🙂
My only contribution is that 'your old freezer' relegated to the garage for beer is often an energy guzzling old model that would be better off replaced.
The so called smart meter is another stress maker , unnecessary , and futile in domestic settings , bit like strava for some people .......

When we converted one of our barns into a place for my Mum they installed a 'smart meter'.
The man from Scottish Power handed Mum the device that displays usage.
"What's this do?", she asked.
"It shows when you're using electricity, like when a light is on" he replied.
"I can see the light is on, I don't need something to tell me" she answered.
Device lobbed into drawer...
7 years ago (cos life is too short to save 5p a day, sorry!)
I think you’ll find you’d be saving a lot more than 5p per day for what could be about 15 minutes effort on a switching site, worth checking IMO.
Glad its not just me that's gone through this, ended up walking around the house at the weekend unplugging things.
Turns out to be the fridge though it has gone up 20p/ night over august so assuming some tarif rise.
For reference if i charge the car (small ev battery) in the night my meter reads 90p in the morning it used be 70p nothing has changed (octopus go).
Edit: ok i'll read the whole post
Standing charge normally, mines about 25p/day so over the summer over a quarter of the smart meter usage/ cost was the standing charge.
Router
Surely he'd get woken up if someone started one of those up?
You haven’t needed to do that for months.
This is true, new threads appear on the forum after about a minute so the act of replying to it gives the impression that it makes it visible.
Having said that, you haven't had to do it on any other website ever so you can see people's confusion and frustration.
“What’s this do?”, she asked.
“It shows when you’re using electricity, like when a light is on” he replied.
“I can see the light is on, I don’t need something to tell me” she answered.Device lobbed into drawer…
Well it's about more than just lights obviously, the aim of the readout is to show you when other things you don't know about are on, or to demonstrate how much certain things use that you wouldn't necessarily realise.
The point of the smart meter is to allow the energy company to bill you more accurately without needing to come round and read the meter, and to manage and monitor their supply network.
That's not a clever anecdote. The assumption that someone would create and install a device to tell you when the lights are on is pretty daft.
They are not energy companies , a misnomer , they are billing companies , that essentially add their bit on top after paying the energy supplier , who was national grid , the network hasn’t changed , ditto gas , water slightly different , but same privatised con trick , bills as percentage of household spending on utilities have doubled since privatisation, lots of shareholders and company execs ( junk ? ) to fund ......
I once knew someone that would flip the main isolator switch every night at bedtime.
.64 x 365 x 80 = £18688
I once knew someone that would flip the main isolator switch every night at bedtime.
he still had to pay the standing charge.
so more like 30pence or 9 grand over 80 years
Probably spent more than that in batteries for his alarm clock and time resetting the clock on the oven and the microwave before they worked..... ill file that under people using their oven/hob to heat their house as the heatings too expensive....
Unless you choose a tariff with zero standing charge.
Don't forget the sex pond. Ours costs a fortune, despite not being used ! Or have kids with gaming machines.
Lets say I won't be working in the shed or conservatory this winter. The bill was huge heating both.
Hydroponics.
Unless you choose a tariff with zero standing charge.
Let's think about that. Zero standing charge doesn't mean you save any more money by Turning it off at the breaker ......
It's still 9 grand not 18grand and that's assuming you live till 96
Cannabis farm
I've had a meter that shows current usage for ages. It's quite enlightening seeing exactly what uses the most electricity outside of the obvious things like kettle, toaster, oven etc. I discovered that my induction hob uses £50 a year even when it's off. It's got touch sensitive buttons to turn it on and off so the circuitry to enable that must be very inefficient. I now turn it off at the mains when it's not in use and use the £50 to buy yet more bike stuff!!! 🙄🤣
Let’s think about that. Zero standing charge doesn’t mean you save any more money by Turning it off at the breaker ……

Ok you win... this bloke was a little eccentric mind.
