Looking for a new set of fronts for my Mazda 6. Never really given much thought to tyres on a car like this before, seems a lot of choice, some cheap as chips and some very expensive

I’ll be sticking in the middle ground somewhere. Currently has Proxes sport on there, I’m thinking the uni Royal rain sport may be a better option for Scottish weather. Both are about 156 quid a corner. For 16 quid more I can get Goodyear eagle asymetric 5 which strikes me as a more premium tyre, however in reality I drive like a grandad and don’t need maximum performance, just longevity and decent grip on the wet

Any opinions on the afformentioned options, or any alternatives

Thanks

What size are they?
£156 each seems quite expensive. I have just bought Goodyear Eagle Asymmetric 6’s for my car and they were much cheaper than that. 225/40 R18 92Y for context
The Goodyears have very good wet braking performance according to a number of tests that I looked at before purchase
The Uniroyal RainSport is excellent in the wet but has high rolling resistance according to this review and doesn’t handle very well in the dry

The review for the Asy5 for comparison

Standard answer of Michelin Cross Climates for me.
Been using them for 9 years now on various cars without any issue.

Fitted 2 to our V60 for roughly the same price you are quoting.
Think we got about 15,000 miles from these ones.

Put some Michelin cross climates on the Leaf last year. Amazing tyres and the grip is so much better. I also got them at Costco for 30% less than anywhere else I could find, if you are a member and near a branch of course.

The OP wants fronts only, I'd be nervous of cross climates front and proxes rear, both are very different. just do what he says:

it thought that was expensive as well tbf but I’ve shopped around. I bought Goodyear asymmetrics for my boxster 2 years ago for that price, and they require a larger tyre

That said my Mazda 6 does have unnecessarily large wheels, 225,45,19 which may explain the price

I really rate uniroyal rainsports and conti premium contacts.
Wouldn't hesitate to buy either.
Had Toyo proxes T1-R and T1-S yonks ago and they were fabulous fast summer 'sport' tyres but wore fast and maybe not as great all rounders as the above.

https://www.tyrereviews.com/ is a good place to look at some of the bulk group tests just to confuse you further!

But to be fair you won't go far wrong picking anything in the top 5 of the group tests.

Well, based on what Audi are fitting to approved used cars I'd go with "delinte thunders" all around

Only £60 each in 19" flavour.

No. I'd never heard of them either. Yes,  I'm still shocked to see such low end tyres on an expensive car

Ah, that explains it. Probably not a very common size. My partner’s Polo has uncommon profile 16” tyres and they are always more expensive (+15-20% for the same tyre) than the 18’s on my Golf

Used approved though.. Basically what ever they can find that's legal and cheapest lol!

I bought some Audi spec continentals for the volvo as they were a tad cheaper than the retail contis. So presumably Audi use, or at least did use continental as OEM tyres on new cars.

Same here - Ibiza tyres (same as polo) are more expensive than the tyres for the Leon (and before that the V70 and Galaxy...), plus fewer options in all weather tyres.

It's worth looking at Asda for tyres. I never knew they sold them but they came out cheaper than Costco and Black Circles for us for a full set of Michelin Primacy's including local fitting.

I’ve been looking on the Asda site. Wasn’t aware of the Costco option. Do they operate in a similar way to black circles, ie but online then they send to your local fitter?

That's what we did. Bought online and fitted a 2 minute drive from home at a generic tyre & exhaust type place. No issues whatsoever.

Good Year Eagle Assymetrics are always good for me. My car currently has them all round - coming up for 2 years old and stilll have reasonable tread left.

I’d avoid anything from Maxxis in the budget-mid range, I found wet weather grip both accelerating and braking poor with the set I had (bought brand new and on a Citroen DS5).

In the mid range I’ve always been fairly impressed with Kumho Ecstas - not a bad all round tyre in my experience (put them on a Seat Leon 140bhp tdi).

On my wife’s car tyre purchase last year we went with some mid range falcons which came out at a reasonable price and were fairly well reviewed. That’s only on a 115bhp automatic Qashqai so they aren’t grappling with performance but they steer and brake ok.

If you have a friendly local mechanic who can fit tires then Camskill are very often the cheapest around for tyres by far, e.g. just looking at 205/60-16 on there, the Uniroyals are between £75 - £95 each.

Edit - £116 for the weird size on OP's car
