If you are in a trade union, their lawyers will probably do it for free/cheap.

Also, I saw an advert in a charity shop window the other week talking about a free professional will for a donation to the charity. Google may help.

Edit - it did. Will Aid

It's normally a flat fee service with a solicitor. Mine was about £250 IIRC. You can get DIY kits, but I'd rather have a professional do it.

We used our family solicitor, cost us £75, although most will probably charge a bit more.

Just think about what you want and who you want it to go to and under what circumstances. Are you married, defacto, are there children involved, if so who will bring them up if you both die, do you have life insurance, if so do you want the payout to be in trust for your children, who do you want to execute the will, etc, etc.

You tell the solicitor what you want to happen, they will put it all in legalise for you.

I know loads , most importantly that it should be properly drafted and tailored to your needs if you are single and childless and don't make them everything goes to your next of kin . If you are married and childless and don't make one everything goes to your wife. For any other situation pay a lawyer to draw up your will. Have a clear idea of what you are worth dead and where you want it to go and also what longstops you want, every one you love may be on the crashing plane with you!
Be aware of the will that apoints the lawyer or other professional as executor with power to bill the estate for their time . Such a provision may be wise for a complex high value estate or for dificult financial/family arrangements but otherwise is an unnessecary drain on the funds.
If you plan not to leave something to someone who has a reasonable expectation of a bequest you will be best to include an explanation as to why . That alawys makes for a fun reading of the will .

Another vote for the solicitor doing it.

Get it right or leave a world of poo to resolve.

Saving money in the making of a Will shouldn't be high on the wish-list, getting it right is absolutely key - and everyone and their needs are different, so it'd be hard to give any form of advice for what is 'best' for you.

possible inclusion:
"In the event of my death all of my bicycles and bicyle parts are to be distributed amongst the good people who frequent the forum at STW"

OK- Disclaimer first, this is what I do for a living but I am not advertising.

About 2 years ago I served on an Advisory Panel for the Legal Services Board. Our brief was to look into the need for regulating the Will Writing Sector, part of that brief was to look at the quality of wills produced via the various channels.

The upshot was that Wills produced by Solicitors and professional Will Writers were good and dealt with an estate properly in about 90% of cases, Wills made online were good in about 30% of cases and home made wills had a 15% chance of getting it right.

The moral of the tale is get your will done professionally, we charge £180 for an Individual or £245 for a couple, and it is always money well spent.

E-mail in profile if you want to know more.

Nick.
