Moving house and having a sort out. Two big boxes of CDs not touched since the last house move. Charity shop or are there better options?

Charity shop if they'll take them, many won't as they can't sell them either. A good chunk of mine went to the tip sadly, literally thousands of pounds worth.

Keep them. In 20 years hipsters will be all over them again just like vinyl then cash in.

Music magpie. Easy to sell and better for the environment. If there are any interesting ones they do still sell on eBay. I still buy loads.

At least with music magpie you get something for them and they don't lie in a landfill... straight away.

Have Music Magpie stoppped buying them? It may only be 30p a CD or so but better than tipping

If you want to save a load of space chuck the cases and put them in cd bags.

Shoot them with an air rifle, before moving onto 2p coins.

Apparently they make good bird scarers.... hung on poles around stuff you don't want birds to eat.

Try these guys.  They may take them instead of them going landfill.

Keep them.

When armageddon happens, and the Internet disappears, you can have the last laugh.

This may occur shortly after 1/1/21...

I still play mine in my old van. Loft full of vinyl that never gets spun.

Have fun wanging them down the garden. For extra points get your kids to stand or run around in the garden and see if you can hit them.

It's quite amazing that Music Magpie still buy CDs - I was looking to buy some with the 20% off last week and search showed that they had over 2.5million CDs listed!! I bought 3 😀

Charity shop if they’ll take them, many won’t as they can’t sell them either. A good chunk of mine went to the tip sadly, literally thousands of pounds worth.

I'm in the same boat.

I recently took a load of retro games and consoles to CEX and got a few hundred quid for them. Flushed with success I did the same with 90% of my DVD collection, one and a half Billy bookcases' worth of discs including a few complete box sets, mostly in 'as new' condition and a couple even still shrink-wrapped. For the entire lot, in total, I got £10. I'd have been better off going to landfill than standing in the shop for an hour whilst they went through it all. I asked whether they took CDs - another Billy's worth - and they all but laughed.

I've a couple of carrier bags full of mostly 80s-00s pop/rock/metal if anyone wants to make me an offer for the job lot. (-:

I've been through the same process recently - sold some on ebay (couple of rare/collectable items made good money but the rest only went for £1 each)

I tried Music Magpie and they weren't interested in about 50% of the titles, and some of the others they were only offering 10p.

I sold a box of approx 120 mixed discs on FB Marketplace last week for £20.

Madness considering what i spent on them...

Just checked on musicMagpie- not interested in about 2/3 of them and the rest worth less than a tenner. Charity shops still taking them so that’s where they’re off to I guess.

Loads of mixed 90s stuff mainly - rap, hip hop, some ninja tunes stuff. Plus a few horror shows in there as well I’m sure 😉

What if it turns out your not as bad a shot as you first thought and all the pellets go straight through the hole in the middle 😀

Check Ebay if you are interested in selling, I had about twenty CD's that go for £10 ish upwards so they are worth the hassle. Charity shop the rest if they will take them.

I love CD's and pick many up for 25p in charity chops and convert them to FLAC files. We spend a lot of time away in a caravan often with no mobile signal so it is great to have all of our music on the Fiio music player. If you are in Cumbria I will happily take them off your hands in December 🙂

Where are you? I love physical stuff and collect any old shit. Mainly vinyl/cassettes but I've just hooked up an old CD player to my amp.

Ninja Tune was always quality!

We've also just moved house and I have a few hundred CDs. Briefly looked at music magpie but I'm not sure I can be arsed scanning in every CD so they've stayed in the boxes for the time being whilst I decide what to do. May compile a rough list and wang them on eBay as a job lot. Would make me sad getting rid but I listen to Spotify almost exclusively now with a bit of vinyl.

I don't have any vinyl now,so I still like looking at the art work on a lot of CDs.

They don't take up a massive amount of space and I quite like the physical side of 'playing' some music.

some ninja tunes stuff

Check on Discogs, some ninja tune stuff is worth a few quid. Probably not worth a fortune, but worth checking.

Will CDs ever become fashionable again like vinyl has?
Unlikely I guess, as vinyl had the advantage of size, so the sleeves are nicer to look at, and a certain retro cachet for older releases.
Less about the sound quality, more about enjoying the medium.

I gave mine to our local charity shops a few years ago. I’d ripped most of them but haven’t listened to those files in a long while.

my SO had theirs in a big CD folder in the back of the car. Unsure where that is or what use it is now that neither of our cars have CD players.

I bought about 160 for £16 from the local auction, all in as new condition and kept about 2/3 - cheaper than a couple of months Spotify 😀 just need to work on the storage side of things 🙄

It might be a generation thing but, there is something about physically owning the CDs. I've been into music and listening since I can remember and although I'd stop way short of audiophile, I do like music to sound good.

I ripped our CDs to hard disk a couple of years ago and the discs are stored under the bed and in a wardrobe all boxed up. Will never let the CDs go, as long as we have space.

One thing I'd advise above all else, is that if you are going to rip and sell, make sure you have the disk space and means to rip them to FLAC or other lossless file structure. You might be all over MP3s and not tell the difference etc but, you can't rip them again once their gone, so might as well have the best quality available for future hardware upgrades and tech that may bring out the quality.

Manchester (Chorlton)

I'm only in Sale. I'll take any decent punk, hardcore punk, reggae, ska, hip-hop.

You get some beers and the charity shop can take the remainder...?

What twonks says about keeping CDs. I cannot imagine getting rid of mine, even if I never play them. What will people do when the internet is turned off?

I kinda think they will. I still have 400+ LPs and 400+ CDs all in storage and can't see myself letting them go, although about three or for of the disks will each be worth more than the rest of the collection combined (such as Iron Maiden picture disks, original pressings of Black Sabbath albums and the original banned cover GnR Appetite for Destruction LP).
