Have the VW first aid kit from my previous car which must have been cleared out pre-sale.

Was going to eBay it but its expiry date is 03/23. Any suggestions what I do with it?

What's in it that's going to 'expire'?

Just keep it as a first aid kit, I'm sure the bandages/plasters/whatever will be fine.

Put it in the boot along with the spare and the tyre inflator. I used to find two or three extra first aid kits added to cars that would come in for repair/refurbishment, including a really nice St John Ambulance one. Get a couple, add small bottles of hand sanitizer, some nitrile gloves, a couple of thermal foil blankets, antihistamines and a couple of Kendal Mint bars, and you’re good for most situations.

Could your Scout group use the bandages for practising with?

Always a good way to fill an evening, tying each other up like an Egyptian mummy.

It's a first aid kit. Do some first aiding with it. Stick it in the car or in the kitchen.

"Use by" dates on medicines / ointments are there as a guarantee of potency; ie, past that date they might only be say 90% as effective. I don't think there's anything that's likely to cause actual harm, not in a domestic first aid kit at any rate. Plasters, bandages, safety pins etc don't go off (unless they're several decades old and actually perishing I guess).

If it's a decent pack you could always replenish it, replace anything old with new products. The one I have on the bike has a bunch of stuff inside that it didn't come with, like a tick twister.

Get a couple, add small bottles of hand sanitizer, some nitrile gloves, a couple of thermal foil blankets, antihistamines and a couple of Kendal Mint bars, and you’re good for most situations.

A disturbing insight into CZ's sex life there.

I know, I shouldn't judge everyone else by my own standards.

I’d buy all their records.

It is a first aid kit, always worth keeping, I'd suggest refreshing the bits and keeping it handy. The bits don't need to be replaced with VW items, you can buy refresh kits -

Might never get used, but when it does it will be helpful to have some kit available.

Those refill kits are a good idea but look to be for the sort of kit you'd have at work. Six pairs of gloves is likely five too many is the purpose is just to get you home.

I guess it depends what the OP wants the kit for and how big the pack is. Something on the bike, something in the car boot, something in the kitchen?

Perhaps "what's in your first aid kit?" might make for an interesting thread?

Yeah, just quick google links to refill packs, there will be more sensible ones available.

Fair. Useful to know that such things exist, it wouldn't have occurred to me.

You only need one then just stick it on repeat.

I've done my own refresh on a couple of kits, most recently on a 13 year old BMW one. IME the only bits that go off in a first aid kit enough to be unusable are the sticking plasters and the alcohol wipes, possibly also gloves. Packaged items like bandages will lose their guarantee of sterility but remain securely packaged and clean, I don't think I'd be bothered about still using them in a genuine emergency, nobody at a hospital will take your word for it that a wound is clean anyway!

To be clear, I’ve got another VW group first aid kit in the boot of the new car, and wife has one in hers. And I’ve got one in my bike bag…

Some of the big self adhesive dressings can deteriorate quite a bit. On one of my first aid courses we opened some up that were a few years (maybe 5) out of date and the adhesive was gone and the dressing was quite bitty. I certainly wouldn't want to have to get that stuff cleaned out of any wounds.

My rule of thumb is that stuff in a personal kit can get left a bit out of date but the stuff I use for DofE is kept up-to-date.

Are there any charities that send them to Ukraine?

I got annoyed at the waste at work and ended up gathering up loads of expiring kits and sifted out the trivial crap and sent the rest to a charity that was collecting for Syria (at the time, probably ukraine now). But that was massive amounts of stuff over a whole company, probably not worth it for individual kits.

I opened an out-of-state space blanket once fortunately as a means of keeping some bums dry.

It totally disintegrated all ove the hillside which was a bit embarrassing and a nightmare to try and tidy up.

You could always have left it with the car? Just in case some poor sod down the line actually needed it? It used to bug me when previous owners would strip out everything with any perceived value. Same with factory fitted fire extinguishers, warning triangles, jack components etc.
