I have an old iPad - 3rd gen Retina, I think. It's stuck on iOS 9.3.6 or thereabouts, which basically makes it useless - no Spotify, no Netflix, no YouTube.

Is there anything useful I can do with it? It's not like an old laptop that I could turn into a Chromebook or pop Linux on...

Best idea I've had so far is a digital picture frame, but I have lots of real picture frames so that's not really terribly appealing.

Replace the shopping list reminders on the fridge and/or family calendar on the wall?

I use my old iPad which is running exactly the same iOS as yours mostly as a big iPod for music on various bluetooth systems in the house. I also have a e-reader app which works really well still.
Having said that I have just checked and YouTube works perfectly well with it, haven’t got Netflix or Spotify though.

That's weird, YouTube is not playing at all on mine. Is this through the Web or the app?

Might have a play, as YouTube would make it more handy.

I have considered a music server, but Spotify is just so much easier!

I managed to trade an old one in and get £150 off a new one at currys....so long as it works, could be worth hanging on to it in case a similar offer reappears...??

I think we have Spotify on ours, probably downloaded before it was locked off. I use mine for comics but the 2000ad app was borked last I checked, might have to move on to the Air2 I was asked to get rid of.

You can jailbreak it and sideload other apps IIRC, we had it set up like that for a while but took it off.

I packed an old ipad full of movies, tv series, music, and e-books. It comes in handy when travelling to have this when wifi and data can be patchy.

You can install the latest compatible version of Youtube - I've done it on an older iPad (only, I think if you previously had it installed on that device). The performance is pretty terrible / frustrating though. It's a weird hack to find it - you have to go into the App Store app, find the previously-installed apps and select it from that list.

I actually quite like this idea. Any recommendations for how to implement that as neatly as possible?

^^ I think this is the real answer.

I can play you tube through the web on mine, but I only use it rarely for that now

You can download the old versions of apps and force them onto the iPad. I have the same ipad and software version and have Netflix and Prime on it. Both work perfectly. It's stuck to a wall in the kitchen to use whilst cooking.

Run MagicMirror on it and mount it behind a half silvered mirror.

Maybe Muc-Off or some sort of industrial degreaser?

Ta all, I'm gonna have a look at some of the suggestions. It's too nice not to do something with, and what it does run runs fine!
