What to do with an old fire extinguisher?

I have a small, recently out of date, fire extinguisher (the powder type that comes with caravans) that I need to dispose of, but have absolutely no idea what to do with it.

Does it need to go to a specialist disposal place or can I just set it off down the garden then take it to my local tip for recycling?

Any other suggestions are also welcome.

Cheers

It'll make a right mess if it's dry powder. I'd fire it off into a deep bin. But once it's empty yeah, just take it to the tip.

Fill it with red paint and head for your nearest RAF base?

Just because it's out of date doesn't mean it won't work. Does it have a pressure gauge? If it has and it's still full, no reason to junk it. If not, keep it around somewhere you don't have an extinguisher currently, e.g. garden shed. It may save your bacon (figuratively!) one day, not having to run to wherever your 'in-date' one is kept.

If you are going to keep for "just in case" invert it regularly to prevent the powder caking at the bottom

bruneep - good point, that's something that should be done regularly with all powder ones.

Having recently set off an old, but still pressurised powder extinguisher i can say without fear of contradiction it makes a spectacular mess….

Cheers for all the suggestions, folks.

I may relocate it to the garage in that case, although there's no bacon to save in there* and pick up a new one for the van.

*Although there is a freezer full of beef cuts.

Discharge and repurpose as a tubeless inflator

Have saved out of date ones at work to use for training in the past.

Once depressurised they can then be recycled or scrapped.

Have you fallen out with any of you neighbours?

Poke it through their letterbox and squeeze the trigger. Tell them you thought you could smell burning 🤣

No don't do that as it's classed as hazardous waste and they won't accept it.

Yes, leave it on the garage/shed/wherever.

An out of date one right next to you is better than an in date one you have to go and get from somewhere else

Is dry powder the best option? It isn't great in an enclosed space and can contaminate everything, computers, clothes, food, the lot

Empty it and recycle

I had a little one for the car years ago, don’t remember what it was filled with but I took it to the local household waste recycling place who took it for me.

It's only waste if its intended to be discarded. If its going to be used for training then its still a thing.

Won't be used for training, we had our own people to refill and recharge extinguishers. We never used anything handed in, unknown contents, unknown history of cylinder.

Bit of cutting, twisting and shaping, it could make a nice small wood burner for the garden.

Looking at the size of it, it would be a very small wood burner. 🤣

I like the idea of converting it into a tubeless inflator

Yep, we wouldn't use it for training and we wouldn't accept it. Local tip should though?

Side note, it was maybe not thought through when they put a gif search button on the reply box... 😯

Empty it and fill it with sand/water so it can be used as a door stop somewhere with a particularly officious H&S bod.

Let it off in such a way that you can contain it.

Then maybe convert it into a homemade Airshot?

I've got a riding buddy that has done this. I wouldn't dare, but he's handier than me.
