You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I've been to Mull a few times but just booked to take the kids there for a few days in the summer. Staying at the excellent Craignure Bunkhouse.
Kids are 8, 10 & 12, we will have the dog with us also.
Current plan is a Eagle Watching trip, Iona / Fingals Cave and a stroll up Ben More (weather dependent). Also need to spend time on an awesome beach. We are a little bit limited by needing to take the dog on all activities (with possible exception of Iona / Fingals Cave where I can leave her with a friend who lives Fionnphort.)
We have four full days there, any other must see recommendations?
Otter watching is another thing to do tho even a couple of glimpses is hard to get.
Think about it for a bit.
The best chippie I've found on the west coast is the silver van on the quayside in Tobermory - fish(cod / haddock and whatever else they just plucked out) just out of the sea - usually get scallops, oysters etc too.
Just north of Tobermory, the headland has a nice walk (go up and over the hill, not by the path by the ferry) about 13 miles and would be ride able for the most part. Takes you through an old abandoned village on the north coast.
For beaches go up the west coast of mull and Calgary bay in particular. The north and south road loops are also a lovely drive in themselves.
I also seem to remember that there was a nice cafe which did amazing hot chocolate halfway along the road to Fionafart, just by the pink road sign.
Mull is a brilliant island
+1 wot scruff said.
Silver fishy van is delicious and Calgary bay one of the best beaches in the world.
I havent done it, but you could do the Tobermory Distillery tour.
try not to get eaten by the midges 🙂
second (third) the chip van
We went with our kids when they were 6 ad 8. It was a bit of a pain because they were too young to properly climb mountains or yomp through the wilderness, and we didn't have enough money to pay for all the tours and boat trips.
It also takes ages to get anywhere. We stayed at Fidden Farm near Iona which was a great site, surrounded by beach, but it took nearly two hours to drive to Tobermory.
If I were into watersports though, and I had sea kayaks or something, I'd go back to Fidden Farm.
The best beach on Mull in Knockvologan - take the road from Fionnphort to Fidden Farm and carry on until you reach a gate, go through and park in the farmyard and take the track down to the beach. Been there in scorching sunshine and only cows and seals for company. there are some interesting bays to explore at low tide - the sea is teeming with fish if you go for a paddle and like flounders wiggling between your toes!
A good day trip is Ulva Ferry - (same place as the Fingal's Cave boat trip) little boat across and there's some lovely deserted tracks around the island and come back for lunch at the Boat House.
Staffa / Fingal's Cave is a great trip particularly during the puffin nesting season.
Ben More is a great climb on a clear day - not a long hike, but a steady incline all the way and you start from sea-level.
