Hi all,

Heading to Lisbon for the first week of June with my girlfriend. We will be staying with some friends for the first half of the week, doing city stuff etc. For the second half of the week we would like to get out of the city and do something vaguely active if possible. Happy to get a train, hire car etc if needed, and find accommodation somewhere.

Hiking would be great, maybe wake boarding or surf lessons. I could be keen for some guided mountain biking (would need to hire a bike), or some tamer stuff to do with the gf.

Any suggestions would be great! Also, any suggestions for things to do off the beaten track/less touristy things to do in Lisbon would be great! (I am taking us to a Pasteis de Data baking course).

Thanks, Duane.

We walked a couple of days on the Fishermen’s trail last year. Stunning scenery and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Vila Nova de Milfontes to Zambujeira do Mar.

Stayed at B&Bs each night then taxi back to the start afterwards.

My wife and I had a meal in a Portuguese restaurant in town on Saturday, dessert being the tart version. (Tarta de nada?) I love these things but we were discussing why they are any different to a British egg custard tart. They aren’t, it seems from the recipe.

@idlejon - they use puff pastry not normal, also none of the recipes say so but I think they use some kind of glaze, whenever my wifes tried to make them they never seem quite right.

Ericeria is a great base if you want to try surfing

The pasteis de nata use puff, the tarta de nata is shortcrust, according to the waitress in Madeira (Kingsway - recommended btw.) But I’m curious about what makes them taste slightly different - it could be the glaze. When’s she making them next - I need a sample! 😁

Sew your pockets up and put a rat trap in your rucksack. Petty theft can be a bit of an issue in Lisbon.

Not really. It says no cycling on the web page. I'm not sure what the access laws are in Portugal and whether that's advisory or you'd end up in trouble.

More significantly, a lot of it is soft sand and there's a fair bit of steep/rough paths in bits. Cycling lots of it would be pretty miserable - especially loaded up with luggage.

Mate went to somewhere near Lisbon the other week and said it was well cheap. So i'd suggest going out for a slap up meal and getting shitfaced!

No more than any other European city.  I felt perfectly safe in Lisbon a couple of weeks back. The Hell of Oxford Street though...

couple of years ago in Lisbon we got an uber to the nearby surf beach for about a tenner, I seem to remember. A train runs along the coast. Whatever, it's not even a day trip. I wasn't aware of Lisbon having a particularly dodgy reputation? (Try bits of Sicily.)

What to do in Portugal?

Palm the kids off to the kids club and park your fat arse next a pool, reading a book, in the sunshine whilst consuming copious quantities of all-inclusive beer and nosh for a fortnight?

That's my plan anyhow. ....Only 73 days to go.
