You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I'm currently unemployed after the great stink of 2020. I've worked in TV-News for the last 10 years (and am exceptionally tired of it anyway). My partner is a anesthetist and has a decent job offer over there...
...the question is...what the hell am I going to do? I have a degree in politics, have lived all over the middle east... I like the outdoors... but i'm not sure what i'm going to do in New Zealand (apart from riding my bike...) I'm 32, and currently have a fairly seriously broken ankle, but was very healthy and fit before then...and hope to get back to that point.
Any thoughts?
Are you single?
If it was me... get a working visa, get over there , take your bike and it'll work out.
Are you moving there? Do you not have visa requirements to work?
My brother and his wife emigrated 14 years ago. They back then had quite controlled 'what jobs'. He got them in as he is an architect, then in need in NZ, but she didn't work a few years until they became NZ citizens.
And sister in law is now camera operator for local news, after a few years of of film script of scene planning for films.
I qualify for a visa as a spouse. My wife has a job offer as a doctor.
The film industry is booming over there right now, especially around the Wellington area, other than that there’s pretty much the same job opportunities as here
View 1 : Mate moved over there with his wife working as a nurse. Life is the same shit there as it is here but 30 years out of date if you want to look at it that way. All the problems he ran away from are still there.
View 2 : Mate moved over there with his wife and couple of young kids to project manage something in the oil industry. 15 years later is running a big renewable and solar company. The opportunities are endless.
Conclusion - it is an English speaking country that is a bit behind the times but open to innovation. It is also on the other side of the world so don't expect to see any of your friends or family again. They might visit but don't count on it
Wherabouts in NZ are you going? I was there in 2012/13 on the same kind of visa (married to a Dr). I had to do a bit of temping here and there while my teacher registration worked out and was rarely out of work. There was a lot of construction-y stuff in ChCh at the time and I kept getting asked back to help despite being 100% useless at manual labour. They were very patient with me!
I was one of a fair number of UK medical spouses in the area and one way or another we all ended up with jobs we liked. One of the things I found there was that the work mentality is so different there that even the jobs I was crap at were really fun.

I was in the same position when I moved to Aus 8 years ago.
Just do it mate. If it doesn't work out, you can always move back.
very much work to live and everyone would rather be camping so they go early on a friday
smoko even if you dont smoke.
everything happens slowly, so just take it easy.

Hey, if nothing else she might be able to sort out your ankle.
I don't know new Zealand but I would have thought it is going to depend on where you wife's job is. Different cities will have different industries and different rural area will have different again.
My vote is something that you can be self employed at. Even if it means a year or two of training (your young enough andb your wife will have a good job so if she is happy to support you for a bit...). Then being skilled self employed you can earn decent money but manage the job you want.
You’ll be fine as long as you are not a fussy emigrant who moans about the TV being rubbish and ‘not like home’
Do it, why wouldn’t you ?

Get building trails?
To get out of this dog shit and litter infested Tory ****ed bleak country to somewhere with Jacinda Aderns warm compassionate leadership???????????
I would literally shove shit uphill with my nose as a job everyday for the rest of my life.
Sorry to bring politics into it.
Set up a company to teach them how to pronounce words with "e' in them. There will be some resistance at first but your politics degree will help you diplomatically navigate this.
Converting Yis to Yes could be your lifetime's work
As said above - jobs wise 'it depends'. According to bro, some industry is desperate for people. Things like construction, film/TV, even basic things like mechanics in some places.
However, it varies on where massively. He is in Auckland but for him there's no alternative really, but a load of the film stuff his wife was doing is Wellington or Christchurch.
The description of great country but 20 years behind seems to be narrowing. The society out there has big problems just like anywhere in the world, access for walking or riding is crap apparently, commuting can be a pain etc.
That said, my brother and family love it. They love the people, the scenery, the house they have (although they moved from Biker Wall in Newcastle...) and it's working out well schools and jobs.
You could do anything. Most of the NZ crew are in Oz working fifo 'cos the coin' better eh bruh?
A corporate lawyer I know went over about 6 years back and invested in a Cross-fit box. He may even still be part owner since moving back he is involved in a midlands based one and still woking as a lawyer as far as I know.
Sounds like film/tv or something fitness/outdoors might work. Start digging on jobs boards or set yourself up.
I don't think you need to over think about work. If you're in Auckland then work along your usual/past lines should be doable, but also a complete change at 32 isn't extreme or worth overthinking. You'll find something and hopefully with one of you working you'll have some scope to try a few things...although Auckland is pricey so depends on financial flexibility.
I lived there for a few years and been back for some bike touring. Friends have now moved back out there. At the time I never considered staying there - the last four years have certainly changed my mind on that score, but now kids, parents, work mean we're bound to the UK for a while.
Anyway job - there's plenty of scope out there for someone that's prepared to be flexible.
Wow. Overwhelmed by the response on here. Going to message a couple of you.

Same situation as me. In fact, I know Stevious from my time over there. Small world, full of expat doctors 🤣
You can go, without a job and without a plan and sort it out when you're there. If your spouse is an anaesthetist then you'll be ok for money on a single salary and you can sort yourself out with a nice second hand Subaru Legacy, find a place to live within riding distance of the bike park and eventually get a job.
With your visa you can work as anything so don't feel beholden to rush in to it.
/edit - and lucky, lucky, bastard. Sort your affairs out well enough that you don't have to come home any particular time and can extend your stay or never come back, should you feel that way.
"Jacinda Aderns warm compassionate leadership" Funniest thing I have ever read. Amazing how media spin presents the truth in a different light when they are bought n paid for.
Anyhoo, do it, despite Stalinda's reign NZ is an great place to live and you'll find your niche when you get here.

Just be aware that if a guy is offering to show you his “dick”, he may just be referring to the timber platform at the back of his house 😉
come on Brainflex - don't leave us hanging on! Let's hear about NZ PM then?
We only hear what's in the UK media, well mostly, which I wouldn't have said were under obligation to be biased towards a country the other side of the world.
Be good to hear a counter opinion? I know she's not overly popular in the hunting and fishing circles.
Why worry...? Just go.
I would literally shove shit uphill with my nose as a job everyday for the rest of my life.
Tea now on phone.
More usefully I lived out there in 1996 for 12 months as a gap year and again in 2004 for 9 months when my then g/f was working in Obs and Gynae.
Definitely go.
The first time I was 18 so it doesn't really count. The second time it took me 3 weeks to get a job in a cafe, 8 weeks later I got a job in a bike shop as I met a bloke on the local chaingang (that went out twice a week at 5.45 am and did the same 40km loop consisting of 4x10 km straights with 4 90 degree corners!) Then another 8 weeks to get a job in the local Uni as I met another bloke out running.
I loved it. G/f less so as the 30 years behind bit impacted her via implicit sexism pretty consistently, although this was 16 years ago. We came back as family (parents) had health issues. If I didn't have a young son now I'd go back in a nano-second.
Good luck!
EdiT. I do remember the paperwork for g/f was a cosmic ballache so be prepared, take multiple copies of everything.
