One of my oldest friends and his wife(and children) are coming this Saturday for lunch.

She is well known spanish chef(originally from Mexico) normally they come for tea so it's home made cakes etc

My friend said he wants beans on toast as he wants something normal to eat for a change !

I want simple and tasty ! (and something my boys will eat)

Thinking...

Goulash
Sausage casserole (hairy bikers recipe)
beans on toast

Ideas please...

This must be one of the simplest yet tastiest meals I've ever made. It's been devoured by everyone I've ever made it for and had plenty of compliments for it which feels like cheating because it's so easy to prepare.

https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/764636/moroccan-chicken-with-sweet-potato-mash

I do leave out the olives though.

I’d bet that whoever it is is sick to the teeth of anything fancy and pontificated.

Beans and poached egg on toast should do it.

Bangers and mash
Easy to make in industrial quantities (apart from your spud mashing arm getting a severe workout!), and definitely satisfies the "something normal" criteria.
Also fits in with sausage week.

you are overthinking it.

Do beans on toast. Poached eggs, cheese chilli sauce if you want.
Or fish finger sandwiches.

Make some posh beans on toast by making the baked beans and bread yourself? You could use a variety of beans and make it a bit more interesting that way too.

It's sausage week so how about Bangers 'n' mash or toad in t'ole.

Apparently it's also vegan week and though ours quite possible to make (occasionally very) tasty vegan food it's not simple to do so in my experience.

Good advice, they're a sod to grill.

To all the people suggesting beans on toast - how are you proposing to do ~15-20 slices of toast and keep them warm to serve at the same time?

Bangers and mash is a good shout, you could posh it up a bit with artisan sausage, carrot and sweed mash, caremalised onions in the gravy. Possibly some peas.

Garnish with an aunt Bessie's yorkshire pud.

fajitas..... Put all the elements in bowls on the table and let people build their own. Nice and social, and the kids will love it.

don't try and outchef the chef with a fancy 173 ingredient dish.

Good produce, cooked well, served hot, job done.

+1 for sausage and mash as it's sausage week, and you can get several types for variety.

if it was me I'd go down to the posh bakery and get some nice fresh bread. Then to the deli for some olives, nice ham, stuffed peppers and cheese. Tesco for salad stuff. Maybe make your own hummus because it's easy and tasty.

Chuck it all on the table, open a bottle of wine, job done 🙂

Do top crust pie with mash

Casserole is easy, just cook it for a few hours so everything is tender (and the sauce has been reduced to a very thick lush sauce). Then buy shortcrust pastry (if you can't make it) and lob it on top. Tastes amazing, proper british food, lush! With creamy mash as a bonus

Fajitas.
Fun for everyone and you can 'customize' it for your own preference.
Depending on the age but kids love it too. A bit more interactive than ladling xyz from casserole dish to plate.

🙂 I knew the top crust pie would do it

I would say it has the best return on investment though, no blindbaking or any of that cr@p. Looks good, is literally just lobbed on afterwards too. Brush with milk or egg so it's nice and golden

(I made a top crust pie last weekend with some braising steak, my word it was good!)

Fortunately, we've been able to stabilise the political situation in the region by threatening to unleash the nuclear option of a Haggis Supper and a Munchy Box on Binners a.k.a. Fidel Gasto.

It's a policy of peace through superior fryer power known as ...

Mutually Assured Indigestion

Easy there Nobeer.
You don't just unleash your Stauner during the first encounter.
That would be ungentlemanly. 😉

home made hummus is EVEN TASTIER THAN GROUT, Binners. I know that's a controversial thing to say in the rural North West, but try it some time 😉

If someone made me beans on toast for lunch I'd be a little offended. Why not go the whole hog and give them a Ginsters from the garage ?

I would make them something you like and are confident in making, abd that you can make the night before to improve the flavour and save you trouble when they come round. That sausage casserole looks decent

My culinary dream is the 16" tandoori munchy box. As far as I'm concerned, me not being able to have this simple request filled is the most damning indictment yet of modern consumer capitalism

Why didn't you just go there with Mrs binners on honeymoon? It's your own fault, you had the perfect opportunity and you wasted it with some fancy holiday.

I'm thinking of coming up and seeing if I can start some kind of franchise operation South of the border.

Think of the artery-hardening opportunity....

Today? East Lancashire.

Tomorrow? THE WORLD

MUHAHAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!

The problem there binners is rule number two: don't get high on your own supply. We all know how that ends.

Providing you are reasonably good at it I would go with the goulash option. Or if you can cope with doing a good roast then roast beef and Yorkshires for the English vibe.

This - Jamie lamb recipe

All day cook in the oven with literally 15 mins prep. We've done this twice in the last month for friends as it's so nice. I'd suggest adding twice as many lemons as his recipe

Nobeerinthefridge:

that pic reminds me of the night before my wedding where my pals from manchester came up and were round at mine for the evening. When asked what they want for dinner, one piped up that they wanted a fish supper like what I had banged on about whilst at uni (cause the ones we got from the chippie round the corner were crap and I said ours were better).

Imagine the face of the poor stafford lad in the queue attempting to listen to the local accents say "half pizza supper pal" when he watched half a pizza get dunked in the batter and flung into the fryer ... he simply could not believe it. Still make me laugh.

Op cook them curry lamb/beef using Thai red or Green or massaman curry paste.

No chef in this world can call their curry the best in the world.

Nobody but nobody.

😛

p/s: I am cooking curry lamb tonight ... 😀

Sausages is my default answer to 'what for dinner?'.
Either with mash, or as toad in the hole with mini roasties and roast veg to keep life simple.

An easy option may be to get a some steak pies from a local award winning butcher and maybe some gravy if they do their own. Roasters in the oven with the pie. Selection of veg on the table. Trough in!

All in a success !

Starter
Asparagus with fried Chorizo
&
Beef tomato /mozzarella salad
(warm crusty poncy bread)

Main
Beef Sausage casserole
Mushroom Rice
more warm poncy crusty bread

Dessert
Cornish ice cream
with a poncy cheesecake (not homemade)

Must have been good as they arrived at 12pm and they didn't leave till 11.30pm ! I made so much casserole there was enough for round two in the evening ! (two big le creuset dishes, was hoping to have it for dinner today!)

Plenty of red wine consumed by the [s]children [/s] adults

and the bonus was a free firework display up on the Green !

Thanks for all input
