Stainless steel is better but must come with certain weight.

I had a rather similar one in lead when I was a kid.

How about one in tungsten? Lots of mass to keep it spinning.
Ha, just had a dig around on the site and they do a tungsten one, their 'champion' top.
Very tactile things, those tops.

There must be an optimum mass based on how much force you can produce to make it spin.

Too light and you can't transfer all the energy. Too heavy and you can't spin it sufficiently fast enough to make use of the stable period before it falls over.

I must admit the copper, bronze, brass and cast iron are very appealing, especially the bronze and copper; brass patinates nicely as well, I've got a couple of brass Zippos, which are developing their own character over time.
One of these tops would make a nice pressy to myself for my birthday...
