The pipes under the sink have been leaking for awhile and I've finally got round to trying to fix them.

It looks like someone has bodged connecting the two sections together using the black pipe in the picture. There's black gaffer tape on the lower joint to make the pipes fit together better and the same on the top joint. Any ideas what pipe sizes I need to replace the black stuff with?

The black ones are 'Push fit' and the white are 'compression'. The link below suggests that the lower of your two joints 'should' work, if done right, but the top one doesn't seem to have anything holding it together. I would buy some compression fittings and pipe to replace the black - if there's a brand on the existing white fittings, get the same if you can, but don't worry if you can't (you'll probably have to buy 2m of pipe but it's not expensive).

A few general rules:

Solvent weld pipe is a bigger diameter than push fit so the two are not compatible.

Compression fit has enough leeway to work with both so you can use it to add removable joints to solvent weld and join solvent weld to push fit.

Shouldnt need any bodging with tape. I would rip that lot out and replace it (keep the sink fittings though).

Do you have a bottle trap or dry non-return valve of some sort amongst that lot?

Double check whether its 32 or 40mm waste.

Then get one of these: http://www.screwfix.com/p/mcalpine-multifit-flexcon4-flexible-connector-white-40mm-157-242mm/86386

I'm sure it will raise gasps and shouts of 'bodge!' but after going back and forth to the shop with various offset angles etc I concluded that my new sink just wasn't going to plumb into the existing waste through the wall (old sink had a metal waste system). I thought it would clog eventually but it never gave any bother and reduced the bulk of the pipework under the sink, would use again 🙂

You would be able to remove that first 90 bend as well which looks like its been chopped in half.

Something else to be aware of - various bits of pipe that come in a waste 'kit' can be strange sizes that don't work with standard waste pipe fittings - god knows why!

It's a bodge. It looks like a bowl and half kit has been butchered as the vertical bit usually attaches to the half bowl. Probably because of the gable of the cabinet being in the way.
As stated the black pipe is pushfit (awful stuff ) which is smaller than solvent ( good stuff )

Rip the lot out and fit 2 mcalpine p traps

http://m.screwfix.com/p/mcalpine-tubular-p-trap-40mm-white/75915?kpid=75915&cm_mmc=Google-_-Product%2520Listing%2520Ads-_-Sales%2520Tracking-_-sales%2520tracking%2520url&cm_mmc=Google-_-Shopping%2520-%2520Plumbing-_-Shopping%2520-%2520Plumbing&gclid=CInyuI6688cCFRESGwodx3ECjQ&kpid=75915

You might have to remove a bit more of the gable to get it to fit.

Yip they've cut the horizontal bit. Nothing apart from the female end it should go into will fit.
A temporary bodge would be to wrap it in self amalgamating tape, might stop for a while but I'd leave the bowl there.

He'll struggle to get a bowl and half in. The bit that's on the right (bowl) should be on the left (half). That's why they've bodged it as it will foil on the cabinet side.
