Can anyone tell me what I've done and how to fix it? I was working on a powerpoint document, and after I saved it to a folder, went to send it as an attachment, only to find that the little icon beside the document had changed.

So I opened it, and it opened in openoffice. Now, all of my MS documents on this PC are doing it! What's going on? How can I get it back to normal?

Or, in your case, set Powerpoint as the default for .ppt files etc

Right click on the file icon, select "Open with..." Scroll down through "Other options", select "More apps" if the one you want isn't displayed. Select the app you want and then check the "Always use this app" box.

You've installed openoffice and it's taken default status
If you don't want openoffice, uninstall it. If you do want it, follow the steps suggested ^^

Are you the only person that uses that PC? Did you knowingly install OpenOffice?

In which case you might have a more serious problem!

Have you installed anything else recently? It's possible that OO was included as an option unless you unticked a box during the install process

Easy enough to set the default app back to Office, just do what scotroutes or thols2 suggest. The reason I ask if you installed OpenOffice knowingly is because often a new program will set itself as the default for specific filetypes as part of the install process.

If you didn't knowingly install OpenOffice I'd be wondering if it was on this PC before and I just didn't use it or know about it?

If yes: Why has it suddenly become the default app for these file types?
If no: How did it get on here?

Most likely a completely innocent answer but you never can tell these days. Per scotroutes, maybe it piggy backed another installation - it's not uncommon to have to deselect something. OpenOffice is part of the Apache org now I think, did you install a web server for example?

I once had my Browser and search engine suddenly default to something new and unwanted that I wasn;t aware of. It turns out that it was a 'hidden option' in some anti-virus software I had installed. HIdden as in the uncheck box was on page 147 of the terms and conditions so you never saw it. Really annoying as it did this weith every virus update so I ended up getting rid of the anti-virus software

Yes, that used to be one of the worst things about Windows, especially if you bought a cheap PC. You had to be really careful installing any software or browser extensions to make sure they didn't have hijack software piggybacked with it.

Obvious things to do are to uninstall any unwanted software. If you don't want OpenOffice, uninstall it. You can also hit Alt Ctr Del to launch the Task Manager, go to the Startup tab, then disable things you know don't need to auto load.

Another way to reset Office as the default application is to just reinstall Office as a repair installation. If you just click through on the installation, it will set itself as the default application.
