Putting together a list for Santa and figured an acceptable pair of headphones should make it on there. Realistically only going to be used with a new iPhone at home and out and about.
These AKG Y50s seem pretty tasty for £50 on sale. But are they really going to be much better than a cheap pair of Sony's I picked up a while back.? They're okay, but is a smartphone really gonna provide output for anything notably better?
Ta
I would suggest Grado SR80s, but they're only really suitable for home use as they're open backed. Amazing sound though. IMO the best sub £100 headphones you can buy - plenty of 5 star reviews.
at home and out and about.

You'd actually go out in public wearing those?
FWIW, I have these, https://www.whathifi.com/sony/mdr-ex650ap/review and despite not being look at me shouty loud branding billboards, and not being very expensive, they're excellent.
Got some Plantronics Backbeat Pro 2. Most excellent if you're a bass lover like me

Tried AKGs - worst phones I've ever heard. Maybe I had a duff pair, cos they get rated by loads of other people, but they really were duff. Audio Technicas are brill.
I bought some AKG Y50BT recently (in more subtle black) and I'm impressed with them. I've picked up things in tracks I know pretty well while wearing these that I haven't noticed before.
IANAA (I am not an audiophile) though.
KRK studio monitors. Not sure if these are the exact model, but they were £80 from www.pmtonline.co.uk: http://krksys.com/Headphones/KNS-6400
Eldest_oab has those AKG's, and I much prefer the sound they make to middke_oab's £150 wireless Sony's.
His are in restrained black without logo.
+1 for the AKG Y50 (in black).. They are pretty good for 50pounds..
Replaceable cable with mic (I use these in the office too for calls)
Comfy and subtle (in black)
Sound good (to me with my wax filled ears)..
+1 for the AKG phones in black.
I've said it before and I'll say it again Sony MDR V6 or 7506 derivative, from the 80's. Cost about 60 quid (I paid 50). There is nothing that beats them for price and all round performance. They have been around in professional use for so long for a reason! You can even connect them to your shit MP3 player and they will still sound good enough.
Superlux and Status Audio do some very good value but good sound quality phones for peanuts. If you want cooler/more money V Moda or AIAIAI.
You’d actually go out in public wearing those?
Also available in black if you go through life terrified of what other people think of you.
Audio Technica m40x
Another vote for Audio Technica m40x
I'm fairly heavy-usage re headphone and in the last 15 years have been through a few sets of sub-£100 over-ear cans, including Grados and the AKG Y50 as mentioned by the choir. Have also used RHA SA950i (now discontinued, shame as were very good sound for price, but flimsy build) and also a pair of Creative Aurvana Live! (1st gen)
Of the bunch, for both sound and longevity - the Creative Aurvana Live! and the Y50 are the two that stand out. The Y50 edges iT as have lasted the longest and I find them to be very comfortable on the ears/head.
They also fold away nicely (for the size) for stowage, which is really useful as I lug them everywhere.
The sound seems wide and detailed for the price, and in character is on the warm and punchy side (my preference) I listen primarily to rock (all types) ambient, electronic, classical and experimental. Really happy. They're even in anti-Flasheart red*, which was unplanned as were a surprise gift. If you wind up/get wound up with a red (or yellow) set and find that people do verbally object to the colour then turn the volume up until their voices fade away. Or buy black 😎.
* also sporting some silver duct-tape on one side as the ratchet on one side ( for the drop-adjustment) worked loose. I couldnt be arsed/patient enough to return them for exchange as they get heavily-used every day and night, at work and play. Anyway, don't require to adjust them more than once as my head seems to be staying the same size 👴🏻. Perfect!
The AKG C50BT can still be had for under £100 for those that don’t like wires, believe they’re the same as the pricier Y version but rebadged for some reason?
Bought mine on Black Friday last year so they’ve had a good 12 months of hammering, still very happy with them.
Sennheiser Momentum 2 are available on Amazon for £89 at the moment. Don't worry about them being the Apple/iOS or Android version, that's just the way the inline remote control works.
I listened to them and the AKG Y50s back to back, and the Sennheisers were tonnes better. Made the Y50s sound completely flat.
I also have AKG K240s at home. These are great for the price but open backed and very neutral sounding.

Ohhh, now I've got double-curiosity in the aural and wallet region 😡🤣
I'd say don't just order online - go in HMV and listen to a few pairs.
I've got some Bluetooth noise cancelling Sonys with a ridiculous name - ZX770BN, I think.
I can't really comment on how they sound compared to the other options available, as I based the purchase on online reviews & finding something with the features I wanted that fitted into my budget.
But, they sound pretty good to me - perhaps a bit bass heavy, but I find that with a lot of Sony kit. The noise cancelling works well, although having recently listened to some more expensive Sonys in John Lewis, the offerings around £300 are definitely better (no real surprise there).
Battery life is good & you can use the supplied lead to listen to them if the battery dies - although somewhat obviously, you won't get the benefit of noise cancelling.
I think RRP is a bit over £100, but they seem to be regularly on offer for £80.
Creative Aurvana Live!
Ignore they fact they're made by Creative, they use Denon drivers. Check out the reviews on the Head Fi forums.
^ +1 as mentioned upthread. Loved them Although the current (2nd) incarnation gets some bad reviews for snappage? IIRC my 1st gens broke at the wishbone, but after years of heavy use
That said - 1st gens are currently around £40 which is bargain IMO. Ideal for home use if handled with care, and you'll be getting performance that is very similar to quality headphones that cost £200+

Excellent feedback peeps.
Seems there is most certainly much love for the AKGs. The BT version is tickling my fancy for sure.
Am going to research the others.
Out of interest, are you mainly using smartphones and getting the quality you mention? As above, that's going to be my only source of input and I'm finding it hard to imagine exactly how great the quality can go. Ta
Buy these now:
They're normally £150 and are class.
For under a ton it's almost pornogrpaghic.

I’ve been happy with my AKG. I bought them from Argos. Something odd like the wrong product code on them
Not using my headphones with a smart phone, no
I’m using them for mixing music recordings, Cubase Elements on a Windows laptop with external Yamaha sound card, individual stems recorded on a Zoom R16 portastudio.
Shure SE215
can I just check, under a ton for the cans or the full rig ?
Amazon have a deal on Bose QuietComfort 25 today, down to £130 from £290
I picked up a pair of Urbanista Seattle headphones for £30 from a clearance package we got through work. Wasn’t expecting much, but they are actually pretty good. Think they retail for around £90.
What is it that compells Hi-Fi loons to become mega verbose when discusssing equipment ?.
I really like good kit but for the life of me I can't be arsed waded through reviews like these, the third of the reviews is not a even a review of AKG cans but a review of three others brands that goes on for fffing ever. What a knob
