Freester Jr has held out for quite a long time and is one of the last in his year without a mobile. But he's beginning to ask for one and to be honest personal circumstances mean probably it would be useful.

Where we live (rural) O2 and VF networks are good. Was having a look at Giffgaff (MVNO on O2). Seems OK no contract some good data deals for around 8-10UKP a month. Data is king is this day and age right?

Anyone else I should be looking at?

Lebara, usually have good offers and they're well priced anyway. Vodafone I think though, if that's an issue.

Edit - ...but not if VF is Vodafone!

Recently went with Smarty 4Gb for £5/month for my sons first phone. Is Three network though (but does include WiFi calling).

Sky use O2 network and any data unused per month gets saved for 3 years so you can add data when you need it. Would suggest getting a large data SIM initially then after 6 months or so drop the data (and £ per month) and just use the saved data in the piggybank.

I've recently gone from sky to EE as I got a good deal through my BT broadband.

All depends on expected usage.

I barely make calls or texts away from home, but I like to have internet if no free wifi is available when away from home. Even though Three increased their PAYG prices to 10p per minute call and 10p per text (used to be 3/2/1p for call/text/1MB data), it's cheaper for me to use PAYG for calls and texts, using a Three prepaid 24GB data sim (over max of 24 months) for internet (these were £36 each from Amazon when I last bought two in '20).
Effectly I'm spending ~£30 a year on mobile sims.

Lebara via Money Saving Expert link is £2.65 for 6 months unlimited calls, texts and 9gn data. 30 day contract too. Vodafone underneath.

I'm on Voxi, Voda's own MVNO and have no complaints. Really easy to switch plans (click a button on the website) if you need to up a monthly allowance temporarily. Also includes access to many popular social media sites without coming out of your allowance so depending on what your son needs it could be useful.

SMARTY here for my wife and I. Simple month by month plans with good allowances using the O2 network and 5G enabled (not all resellers have 5G plans).

VOXI for my son as they have/had the same data for the money, but with free Social Media when he signed up. VOXI is Vodaphone, they even use dual branded SIMs so you get the same level of customer service (it's the same call centre/support team, but sadly is not that good).

Many will offer incentives if you recommend a friend (£10 credit for you and the person that recommends you on SMARTY last month (may still be active). As him to check if any of his mates can give a mutually beneficial referral code

Lebara - uses Vodaphone. I was with them, I moved to Lyca for £1 deal for 1 month, simply so I could move BACK to Lebara on an MSE deal. Unlimited Calls & Texts and 12 GB data for £1.45 a month for 6 months, then £6.90, but I'll flip again at that point.

My 12yo is just coming to the end of a 1p a month Lebara deal, so he will flip too. Why anyone pays £££ for SIMs is beyond me.

Both kids are on Lebara. No complaints, seemed cheaper than Giffgaff for the same amount of data.

If you jump on Wikipedia, there's a page listing which carrier every service provider uses.
