lads at work are on about all putting £100 in a pot and trying a gamble over Christmas. we can't decide what to do tho. so far we've thought about shares, scratch cards, horse race, all on one colour at roulette or premium bonds. favourite so far is shares but we wouldn't have a clue what to back.

any other ideas for us to consider or advice on shares?

cheers

If anyone ever offers you advice on shares, don't take it. Those who offer advice usually don't know what they're talking about.

Accumulator on the football, pick teams at home who are playing low ranked southern teams facing a long trek north on wintry days days. I had a friend who claimed this strategy made him a fortune. Disclaimer I have never tried it though

I'd go for shares.

Blockbuster looks like a no lose option at the moment.

Decide first if you want to gamble for excitement/entretainment or gamble with a half decent chance of winning.

Evening out at a casino much more fun than watching a share portfolio accumulate fractions of a penny on a screen, well unless you're some sort of merchant banker 😉

I really wanna get involved with Bitcoin.

But as a complete computer muppet the tech side of it has me scratching my head.... ewallets and the like or how to protect against some hacker stealing your code etc etc...

In fact it stopped me getting some a month or so back ... d'oh the value has only double since then.

Any of you nice gents care to enlighten me on how to actually buy and hold these things ... (tried online guides but it get too techie, too quick for my numptiness)

Don't bet it all on one thing. Pick several reasonably solid gets and spread the risk.

Don't blame me if the strategy fails!

Cheers

Isn't there a big lottery jackpot this week? buy 250 lucky dips online.

Don't really see the point in clubbing together to bet on something unless there is more of a chance in winning if you do so, ie 5 times more tickets.

Putting £500 on red is going to give you the same return each and chances of winning as putting £100 on yourself.

Bitcoin isn;t really a gamble is it? More of an investment?

I'd get £460 of scratchcards £40 of beer and spend an afternoon together seeing what you win.

Ro5ey:
It's a lot more simple that it sounds, but, I guess like all things, it can get complicated.
You can use on-line wallets, and this would just be a site login, with a wallet ID number that holds your coins. Problem with this method, is that if the site goes down or gets taken down, you loose your coins...
Another one is using a program on your computer, the initial startup will take an age because it's downloading the block file, but more security in that, and you can back it up, etc etc.
Then just buy coins from sites, like "localbitcoins" and transfer them to your chosen wallet. Takes 60 minutes for it to go in. The coins have to be mined..
And that is pretty much it.

Please feel free to send me some

Bitcoin is a gamble as any investment is. You may win you may lose - particularly with something as volatile as Bitcoin.

£40 on beer? There's 5 of them!

£450 on beer and £50 on a 200/1 crazy bet.

At the end of it, you wont care if you won or lost.

While you're making your minds up, buy £500 worth of premium bonds:

A. You have. Chance of winning the monthly draw

B. you'll get a your money back when you've decided the prefect vehicle to waste the money.

I like lots of gambles for small stakes - 25p on the roulette table is fun, you can play aaaaaall night and even with rotten luck you're still having fun for hours and not really loosing anything - we used to have a budget of a tenner each - so at least 40 spins and re-gamble everything we won until it was gone. The fun with roulette is the guy standing next to you can be betting 100s or 1000s and really, for 25p you're having more fun

So I propose

25,000 plays on the coin pushers

Turn it into a competition between you.. £100 and 4 weeks to make as much money individually. Winner gets a free meal and beers.

Get a day trading account and 'short' bitcoins. Possibly in a bubble at the moment, if you can afford to loose the £500 it might be worth a punt. NB have a stop a £500.

Bitcoin but you may be in for a roller coaster ride.
The market is worth nearly 5 billion dollars ( or could be by tomorrow) have a look at bitstamp for real time prices.

i'll do you a quick crowd fund, i need a new computer for my business. better to throw cash at a good cause (i.e. me) than the bookie who has heaps already.

You need to use the fund to buy multiple chances of winning for it to be worth clubbing together, otherwise may as well invest/bet individually. (Unless you can get better odds for betting larger amount)

Actually that last one is a good shout.

Buy 3UKL ln .... that's a stock code for... an ETF (exchange traded fund) that track the FTSE x3 ... ie ftse goes up a 1% 3UKL will go up 3%.

Edit ... Actually thats a rubbish idea, you are wanting a much better return than that can give you.

If the fTSE went up 5% from here to xmas... and thats doudtful even if you are a bullish like me... that would mean a 15% return on the 3ukl. Giving you a total of 575 and making a grand total of 15 quid for yourself .... dont spend it all at once 😆

Problem with this method, is that if the site goes down or gets taken down, you loose your coins...

I don't mean to argue (as I have said, I dont have the knowledge to be able to do that) but that seems like quite a significant risk.

And what about spyware? Someone "watching" your computer and being able to "see" what your pass code is for that on-line wallet ?

It's the wild west out there in bitcoin land and that's a good thing if you want to make money long term. (I'm want to buy a couple of K and forget about them for 20years) But it means you have to be double careful not to get burned.

Sorry hi-jack ... I'll start a new thread.
