Been informed Birkenstocks are no longer acceptable, so what now for mid 40s male? Greek Islands, so casual going on scruffy is order of day. But not sure I can sit in a restaurant in Reefs and I could not look in the mirror wearing boat shoes. Help.

Obviously the fishnets go otherwise I get a patterned suntan, and that would just be silly.
Birkenstocks are de-rigeur for your middle aged middle class man, surely?
Boat shoes - you either need to be young or an old bloke with a brass button blazer...

Don't you know boat shoes are coming back….(Nooo!!!)
Leather upmarket sandals/thongs(Aussie version!) do me for most of Summer (when not in the Specialized Shoes with cleats!)
Hint…no black socks though.
Vans....or Orchids.
😆
Teva flip flops are my only footwear from June through to September. Very comfy and look good. A lot of time is spent on the beach though.
Flip-flops = fine on the beach. Pretty much attached to my soles all summer too. But leather 'dress' ones like the above, surely you look like you've nicked the wifes shoes? Sadly Tron, I'm informed that Birkenstocks have now retreated back to Scandinavian sock wearers, which has thrown me badly as they have been the default evening holday footwear for some years now. Maybe Birkenstocks and fishnets?
Sanuk vagabonds here for when i want some thing 'smarter'' than sports sandals for resteraunts etc
Vans Era in navy/black...pretty much universal.
jeez... if you have to ask this sort of question here... then bare feet so people will know here walks a man with no confidence to dress himself after 40 odd years!
the blood from your feet will lead many more to you to point and laugh at your shame!
Whatever seems to be appropriate for the conditions.
Not deck shoes, not sandals - both

Actually, thus far Mooman wins.
On holiday. Barefoot given 1/2 a chance. Part of the reason I would live in NZ given the chance, only place I have seen signs asking you to wear shoes in the bottle shop.
Otherwise hiking boots, bike shoes or flip flops.
Of course if it is winter I will be in snowboard boots or hiking boots.
What tyres for shoe shopping ?
A. Have any of you been to Greece?
B. Are any of you 40+? It's tough you know. It;s like some weird twilight zone that fashion has forgot.
A. Have any of you been to Greece?
Yes. See above re summer holiday shoes.
Fashion? Really don't care about it. Obviously.
I wear my rigger boots. I'm dead gritty and working class, like and people have to know this.
Have Birks ever been fashionable? Still wearing mine. They can't be worse than deck shoes. If they are, I don't care!

Gag
Edit. Link to Merrell.
what is holiday?
Converse.....
But then they are my go to shoe all year round
Transapp, nice cut sole there. Not my style of shoe, but good sole!
Race or Deck is more my bag. Ugly but functional[img]

Or, casual stuff

at the moment.
Love a razor cut sole on a wet deck, though!
wait4meHow is this smarter than anything????
That is smart by my standards, but then it's often said that I don't have any standards 😆
Besides I thought they matched the brief.....
casual going on scruffy is order of day
Birkenstocks for me.
