Off to France next weekend and I'm wanting a sat nav to get me there and while trundling about while I'm there - been looking at TomTom XLIQ2 - but it seems hard to get hold of - so what do people recommend

We've used a TomTom system (one of the better models but surely mapping etc is the same???) and on my PDA we used a mapping system called Mapopolis for several years. Mapopolis wasn't that good, identifying little service roads on the autoroutes as junctions, but the TomTom was great. Cannot tell you which model as wife has it in the car with her currently, got either 400 or 700 in my mind. Includes a bluetooth handsfree function if that helps and wasn't cheap, we bought it from Amazon as a package with hard case etc and was cheaper than high street (Halfords) retailers.

Took us to Paris & surrounding areas last year which must be a decent test of a sat nav. Not had it long enough to do a decent north to south and back trip, but wouldn't have any concerns doing so with it.

I bought a garmin streetpilot from Halfords about 3 years ago for £150

It was half price as the new flat screen type were gettin popular.
Bargain. It's taken me across France and too Gibraltar.
I think as long as you get a decent branded one with European maps you'll be ok.
Must say I prefer garmin to tom-tom though.

on previous trips used tomtom on my Nokia phone - unfortunately I've up graded to a HTC desire - which has good mapping but is internet based - and I'm not using that - anyway now been distracted by Garmin nuvi 1490t - any thoughts?

The cheapest Tom Tom that comes with European mapping.

We took hours to France a couple of years ago, absolutely faultless, even driving around Paris.

IMO Tom Tom beats Garmin for usability & the ability to re-route on the fly.

As others have said, if you have an iPhone then co-pilot is great. And it doesn't use your data allowance. Just GPS.

My Garmin Nuvi 250 got us round ok. Except when it took us through the middle of Tours on a Saturday afternoon for no apparent reason instead of staying on the motorway. 🙄
