What's the best razor? Recently been using wilkinson sword Quattro cartridges....nice and smooth, but I struggle to get more than 2 or 3 shaves out of each cartridge before they are clogged up. Can't see why more expensive titanium ones would be any better. Use.d to use cheap tesco cartridges but i got too many nicks, same with bic disposables.
So what's best wet razor?
And while we are at it what's your gel/foam/shaving stick of choice?

I must admit I quite fancy the idea of a proper razor.......and brushes
Merkur Futur.
At the moment:
Astra blade blue pack
Gillette 61 gram barber pole.
Erasmic shave stick
Kent shave brush
Hai Karate aftershave
Merkur HD34C here. Switched to a real razor because the normal blades are so expensive! I use Feather Platinum blades, tried a few and these are amazing. I just use normal King of Shaves gel, foamed up and applied with a brush.
Beard...
Gillette fusion proshield. No shaving foam / gel, just water. Doesn't go anywhere near my face
Merkur Progress and 11C razors for me along with an assortment of blades. Simpsons brush and Taylor of Old Bond St or Palmolive shaving creams. Floid, Speick or Proraso aftershave
I gave up on Gillette Mach whatever years ago due to high blade costs and nicks and rash. The foam/gel in a can didn't help either I'd guess.
Merkur 20C using Astra platinum blades (or feathers if you don't mind being slashed to ribbons). Proraso Eucalyptus & Menthol Shaving Cream. Real badger hair brush.
done all the DE razor thing but not for me, i finally settled on single edged injector razors. as usual, went in balls deep and ended up with about 8 different types, all good in their own way for different smoothness/aggressiveness. favourite currently is a PAL injectomatic with purple head, smooooooth as!

use an arko stick for foam purposes.
Gilette Mach 3 been using them years now. Nice custom handle from specialist shop. Nivea sensitive skin gel. If you razor is clogging after 3 shaves something is up with your technique - wash face with warm water so beard is soft, clean razor every few strokes with a swish in sink ? Mine go months although I admit I don't have the thickest growth
Cheapo Aldi own brand, the blades are really cheap and last much longer than gillete.
Love my Gillette Sensor Excel. Tried many others and always go back to it.
I use Wilkinson sword Quattro titanium. Never had a clogging problem unless I don't rinse after each swipe or two.
Very handy detailing blade on the reverse side as well, makes getting up to the bottom of my nose easy.
Edwin Jagger handle, various blades (working through a selection pack) at home.
Shave oil under arko soap, lathered up on my face with a cheap Wilkinsons sword brush.
If I'm away from home, I use a disposable 3 blade Wilkinson sword razor and some shave oil, vaguely lather some soap on top just to make it easier to see where I've shaved.
Mach 3, been using for years, wouldn't use anything else. Razors don't clog, just rinse them properly
Merkur something (can't remember the exact model) and Feather Platinum blades
Gillette Mach 3. I find that the Fusion clogs up quicker and is no better.
Blimey!
Opposite end of the shave market for me. Cheap multipack of what ever disposable is available. Currently on gilete lady. Get about 3-4 weeks per razor and do legs with that too. I'll use a shave foam if available, but a bit of normal soap does just fine too.
Gillette SuperSlim with Astra or Feather blades.
Don't bother so much with soap & brushes; just Nivea shave gel now.
Number 3 around face - full 9 on neck area.
Smoothest cleanest shave.
Mach 3, Trumper's Sandalwood soap and badger brush. King of Shaves oil while travelling.
I've finally found my perfect razor after 3 years and many many tests...it's the Mongoose Stainless SE...it's WAY better than the Cobra but rare as hens teeth to get.
Linky
It's the only razor I can go ATG on first pass without any irritation. I can also go for multiple passes (5+) without irritation. Feather Pro blades will yield 7 BBS excellent shaves...I could double that number but for the sake of a few pence I just swap it out every week.
Tabac soap is my current favourite...it's tallow based which might not suit all users.
same as cheesy.
Merkur 43c (from sadexpubnks DE clearout 🙂 ) with Feathers
Merkur Progress in France. And a Parker 4 piece travel DE razor for on the go.
A 90g Arko shaving soap block has been going for 2 years and probably has another 2 left in it! (But then I only shave once or twice a week)
Taylors shaving soap is my luxury pot.
Bluebeard's revenge aftershave balm is my stinky.

Got a souped up version of a Merkur Progress but it takes too long to use.
Wilkinson Hydro 3 blades on a Hydro 5 handle as the 3 blades don't clog as much as the 5 and the 5 handle has a 'buzz' mode which make cutting the awkward bits around the throat, etc, quicker.
Most cartridge razors have a 'lubricating' strip which just serves to make them drag and seem to need changing more often. Mach 3 is one such.
The hyro doesn't have such a strip and I use it with KOS shaving serum (the green one) and the blades last quite a while. Had 4 weeks of acceptable shaving the other month.
Muhle R41, currently rotating blades - Gillette Rubie, Feathers. Geo F Trumper Limes shaving cream although the TOBS Sandalwood is nice too!
I shave once a week so use Gillette disposables to hack the fuzz off (I have "weird beard growth" according to a barber) followed by a Gillette Fusion (I think). Proper soap and brush. Tried lotions and potions and this is good for me. If I had to shave every day I'd grow a beard.
Got a Merkur razor of some description - 33C, perhaps?
I initially used Astra blades, but then bought a selection pack I'm currently working my way through, trying a different one at each new blade until I've worked my way through them.
Only shave once or twice a week, so my current stash of blades is probably good for about 4 years and only cost £11....although I probably won't bother using a couple of them out of the selection pack as initial impressions weren't great.
Have been using Taylors shaving cream stuff, but got a Muehle wooden bowl & soap for my birthday last week, which is good but quite different. Cheap Body Shop brush seems to do the trick.
I've been using a Merkur 38C and a variety of blades over the last 5 years, currently on Gillette blades (they don't last long at all though - 4 shaves) from Boots as I was in a rush. Astra's and Derby's are better.
King of shaves gel, though I also have a Badger brush and Maccaroot shaving cream if I've got time.
I rotate between a Merkur Futur, a Gillette Junior Aristocrat and a Gillette Super Speed depending upon how long it has been since my last shave.
Feather blades and either Arco or Trumpers Lavender/Lemon & Lime or Cocunut shave cream depending upon time of year/how I feel 🙂
Choice is good.
as a slight aside - I am looking for the smallest lightest bikepackable (staying in B&B's) shaving foam I can get for a trip in a few days - any recommendations ? Will be leaving the Gillette fusion at home and taking one of wife's disposable Asda ones.
suppose it depends how often you shave and how much time you are willing to allocate.
That hydro combination I use is for shaving every day with a tolerance for only taking a couple of minutes to shave.
Used to use Gillette excel but moved to Gillette mach 3 a good few years ago, not felt the need for anything more. Quick and smooth, usually shave every other day, unless I have to go into the office and see people IRL.
I have to shave every day for work (Army) and have done for the past 21 years. I've tried everything and am now using Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5 and find them spot on. I'm easily getting a month out of a razor. As for shaving gel, I use either Nivea sensitive gel or Bodyshop Maca root shave cream with a brush. This is pretty good stuff.
I've tried using a 'proper' razor but they shred my face.
Your razors shouldn't be getting clogged up after a couple of shaves.

You would be better off with a small bottle of shaving oil.
I'm using a gilette fusion proshield at the moment, gives a very smooth shave, combine with nivea shaving gel.
Oh no. Here we go again. sedexpunk to the forum...
King of Shaves Azor. Blades last a long time, normally can get at least two weeks out of each blade, l'oreal face wash and KoS oil.
Merkur 25C with Feather blades. Bluebeards pre shave oil, Trumpers sandalwood soap, Vulfix silver tip brush.
Used multi blades and shave oil for years, but that was because I travelled a lot with work and needed to shave every day and it packed up small. I wouldn't go back to multi blades now.
have used pretty much most brands in my time in search of the perfect blade...ended up settling on the gillette fusions
i also use a phillishave
but i now have a beard so i only use the phillishave to get rid of the tache and tidy up the edges of the beard then i use the blades to get a smooth finish
I have pretty much always used a brush and soap, but use Arko soap now - great vfm. Use cheap Boots plastic DE razors with Astra blades. Replicated in travelling washbag, with a Mach 3 if they confiscate my blades, as this means I only need to get toothpaste out when going through security - have thought of getting tooth powder to avoid even this hassle.
Rock Razor of course!
A 1959 Gillette 'Fat Boy' with Japanese 'Feather' blades.
After that thread on here I asked for a Merkur 34c for Christmas and 30 Astra blades with some Taylor's soap and brush.
Miles better shave than anything else I've used and I've still half of the blades left.
Twin blade supermarket own brand.
If you rub the blade the non-cutty way along your forearm for about 10 strokes it gives it back an edge. Pack of 5 twin blades normally lasts me about a year.
Wilkinson Sword Classic dual edge, with Wilkinson Sword blades.
I was expecting to get stuck into upgradeitis as usual and end up with a merkur or an antique Gilette or something. But the WS combo works so nicely for me I've not bothered. Bloody cheap as well.
The main benefit though is the lack of ingrown hairs since switching from multiblades.
Still use a Gillette Sensor Excel - not felt the need for anything more and blades are cheap.
+ 1 Ive had mine for at least 15 years I reckon.
Merkur for me too.
I suffer really badly with ingrowing hairs on neck and always had done, within a week of using a Gillette or similar disposable razor they are back, but i shave every second day with Merkur (with some Israeli no -name blade from shavingshack.com, Feather was too sharp) and i ingrowing hairs go within 2-3 shaves.
retro - I have got one of those - thought it was Boots branded.
Use the cornerstone razor too, but it is worth noting even though the blades are excellent and last a very long time, they are exactly the same blades used on Lidl and aldi own brand razors which cost 3 quid a pack.

I've got one of those also. Never got on with it. I got a nice metal DE razor from someone on here (I can't remember what it is or who it was now, I'm so sorry), and the difference is night and day. If you like the WS razor, you'll love a real one I reckon.

I knew I should have avoided this thread.
ive still got a few DE and SE razors lurking in the back of the cupboard now if anyone wants to have a bash, say a tenner each?
Wilkinson Sword Quattro Precision with high powered batteries. Great shave and a blade lasts me about a week. Second the observations about Arko soap and using oil when travelling, good stuff. All followed by Givenchy Gentleman, great smellies at a diminishing price because it was designed yonks ago.

oooh, do tell us more... e-mail in profile
Gillette Extreme 3 - i shaver lasts about a month of daily shaving.
Are we talking for back, sack or crack?
Or is this one of those roadie threads again and your all on about your legs?

Shave everything! Make them smooth! 😆
Try the Bearded Colonel - great blades that last well and new ones arrive by post. I go though 4 every 2 months and shave daily except w/e.

x2 cuts me to shreds.
Using a short Merkur, think it's a 15C, with Astra blades. Only ones I've found that work with me rather than against!
Arko soap bar applied with a boar hair brush (was cheap but decent enough) and Arko stiptic pencil in case it goes wrong.
I have thick growth that, even with constant rinsing, a dispoable can't keep up with. The Astras last 2 shaves then they're toast.
Gillette Sensor Excel. Awesome and cheap. Dreading the day Gillette stop making them and I have to have some 8 blade behemoth of a razor that shaves my top lip and chin at thee same time
Mongoose 45% of the time, a Rocnel SE the other 45% and various DE/SE's the remaining
Brushes and soaps not so easy to pick, just try to rotate
Gillette Mach 3 disposable ones. Nivea sensitive gel. Shave every other day. Any longer it's like hacking through the Amazon. Usually get two months out of each razor.
Mach 3 or Mach 3 turbo if their on special. King of shaves gel and just rinse lots. Cartridge lasts me a good month of shaving alternate days, can do 2 months if I'm feeling stingy. Think soap tends to clog the blades more than a gel does.
mac3 and which ever gillette foam or gel I happen to pick up at the time.
*waves at cougar* (its an edwin jagger)
Ah yes, of course. Thank you again, it's tremendous. Found it online, http://www.shaving.ie/products/edwin-jagger-de89l.html
ive still got a few DE and SE razors
Slightly random but, what do the SE blades look like? Only, I have a case knife which takes single edge razor blades; the one in it is twenty years old if it's a day and I'm buggered if I can find a replacement which doesn't involve me buying a hundred of the buggers.
This thread has piqued my interest, reason being I have to be clean shaven for my job, but find shaving quite uncomfortable after a couple of days, so I'm willing to give this a shot.
Any advice for a complete newbie? Would it be possible to get up and running on a £50 budget?
Gilette Mach 3 with King of Shaves oil. Problem free since I started using this combo about 5 years ago. Oh and I use a razor pit to get at least a couple of months of daily shaves from a blade.
I shave my neck once or twice a week now, but even when I was shaving daily I used to get terrible razor burn and ingrown hairs, particularly on my neckline, I have thick and fast growing beard hair too so I would clog cartridges very easily, I found wilkinson sword protector type the worst for this. As the razor companies seemed intent on squeezing more and more blades into the cartridge the problem got worse, all the time costing even more for a blade that lasted less time.
Eventually I got fed up with this do got myself a 1960s Gilette aluminium tech, it's a lovely thing that is nice and small for travel (came in a little leather case with a comb etc too), my main razor now is a Gilette red tip superspeed, it's apparently on the aggressive end, it's nicely weighted and I never seem to have any irritation from it even after shaving a few days worth of growth. At the moment I'm using wilkinson sword soap with a soft badger brush and Astra blades.
I do have an old Ever ready SE but I'm buggered if I can find any blades to fit that aren't meant for a window scraper

depends how deep you want to get into it really bazz. nice razor, brush, bowl, soap, balms etc is maybe pushing it a little bit but certainly a razor, a few blades and a bit of soap/cream to get started can be within that. ive got plenty of stuff bought that i probably wont use again so can send a bit of a package your way for not much money if you wanted to go that way? dont have any DE razors left to sell now but got plenty of SE jobbies. i prefer them to DE, theyre more manoevrable, but not many people know about them.
drop us a mail if you want to know what ive got to sell and see if youre interested.

ive got plenty of new blades for one of those if thats what youre after? (see pic above ^^^^)

That's very good of you, i'll drop you an e mail, probably tomorrow (at work at the moment and have things to do), I wasn't thinking of this as a hobby, it's purely for practical reasons.
if its for practical reasons, to be perfectly honest i find the bic and gillette blue disposables to be really good these days. id happily use them if it wasnt for the fact i like these SE razors, theyre a bit different and you can tailor your shave to be really smooth or use a more aggressive razor for a few days growth. i just like p1ssing around with them 😀
not sure what sort of razor youre not getting on with, but if you havent tried these disposables, and you just want cheap and easy, you cant go wrong with them. cant remember exactly which disposables i tried (i use em when i go abroad for quick, smooth shaves) but if youre interested ill look at a few google images and work out which ones i rate.
Gillette Mach 3 and a bar of Simple soap. Or just water if I'm out of soap. I shave in the shower so just water works pretty well with the Mach 3 lube strip.
Thankfully i don't need to he clean shaven for work and tend to shave only about twice a week.

It is good!
