dj15 - it's an open thread.

Should we not punish them? Give them re-hab, not even lock our bikes away - after all, "it's only a bike".

Not sure what point you think he had? He actually opposed capital punishment.

Its not as much the theft its all the hassle.

People's pride and joy, savings, invasion of privacy.

Unfortunately the judicial system in this country is pretty poor but if you have little to lose then its difficult to punish a criminal effectively.

The sad facts are that if you happen to have a job and catch a thieving scumbag breaking into your home or stealing from you and were to meet out some summary justice you are highly likely to receive a heavier penalty than said scumbag.

I'd rather people worried about how to solve the causes of crime eg inequality than how best to punish offenders.

Pretty sure that would violate their human rights as a degrading treatment 😉

5 minutes of rimming from a hungry alligator should do it.

Failing that the same penalty for stealing a motor vehicle of similar value.

What is the sort of 'punishment' for this? I really don't know.

It's a big PITA as mentioned above, is a couple of quid out of their benefits just?

FWIW - I think they should be made to meet the owner of the bike and apoligise - at least.

Like that Taff - they may even end up appreciating the bikes and the sport.

They may even come to think of a bike as more than "just a bike"...

As long as the bike theifs learnt the error of their ways and didn't do it again then I would be happy.

Kimbers - there's a thread entitled "who has the slowest broadband".

With the time it took you to come up with that effort, you should go on that thread and claim your prize.

flippinheckler - as long as the bike was returned in the state it was pre-theft i'd say that's an excellent point.

If not the compensation should be that of the necessary repair/replacements.

We should also name and shame all the thieving scum in our areas, because the last I heard we can all expect to be burgled three times in our life.

If that's your attitude then you're clearly riding the wrong bike on the wrong trails!
Personally I've got a bit of an emotional attachment to mine, we've shared some good times.... I'm sure a lot of riders on here have similar bonds with their mounts. That's what these thieving scroats don't grasp...
As for punishment? Community service in a chain gang repairing braking bumps at trail centres?

Have UKIP employed people to start talking nonsense on forums or what? All this defend your own home stuff, people talking about "the tax payer", repeated references to benefits and so on... WTF?

patriotpro - Some things are best left to the imagination - was his 'invention' made to cut paper?

He didn't invent the Guillotine. Apparently he campaigned against the death penalty, but was quite a pragmatic doctor who believed that if you had to kill people you should do so as quickly and painlessly as possible, and using the same system for everyone (until then the aristocracy had their heads hacked off with a sword or axe - usually requiring multiple blows, whilst the 'peasants' were hung). And so he proposed the device now known as a Guillotine as a more "humane" way to do it. The device had been invented by another Frenchman.

HoratioHufnagel

Don't see any references to "the tax payer" and only a single reference to "benefits". Would be interested to see how you felt if somebody was burgling your home?

And no I am not picking an argument just interested reading other threads and seeing how they get out of hand with misplaced references? Thanks.

I think mostly I would advocate a rehabilitation therapy of cuddles and treats, visits to the zoo and ice cream and stuff..

Many of these kids will have come from impoverished backgrounds, financially, socially and emotionally.. they need to be given reasons to want to engage with society at large..

24 Hours of Mayhem on a drying course like this year (towards the end) on an Asda BSO, solo unsupported. Should give them an appreciation of the sport.

Well the guy who was caught and convicted of attempting to nick a hack bike of mine was told to pay me compensation of £60 for the damage he caused to said bike (new rear wheel required, bike rack damaged).

That was in August 2011, not seen a peep of the £60 so far....
