Camping time is here and I am going to need a fridge/freezer of some sort.

I have tried searching and reading reviews, but there are so many and as soon as I find something that I think is suitable, I find reviews sayings its really bad!

I am looking for a box type so I can move it and around 25-40ltrs.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

I've got a dometic rc1600 ita 41L very very good imho cost about 300 iirc but ive seen cheaper and they do an even cheaper one the rc1200 that seems good I went for the 16 as I was using abroad , it runs on 12v, camping hook up and gas, it is best in gas mode

I've seen them cheaper and I've seen other branded ones that look identical cheaper too

Hope that's the sort of box you were after lol, it's transformed our camping in hot weather

I got an Alpicool off Amazon a few years back, Chinese brand but seem well regarded, not let me down yet!
12/24v only but, if you have the battery setup, that’s the way to go really IMO.

I’ve got an Alpicool c20 and it’s been ace. Use it a lot for days out or overflow at home (esp around Christmas, parties, etc) as well as camping. Easily keeps stuff cool even in a hot tent.

I’ve been looking at the Alpicool T36 for summer camping trip, it’s around £250 but can freeze and cool at the same time, or just cool both sides. The baskets would be handy too, you always get stuff stuck at the bottom.

Cheap thermoelectric cool boxes use a lot of power and will flatten a car battery overnight, so only practical whilst driving (even then the plug can get hot due to the poor design of 12v sockets, we melted one) or if you have electric hookup and a mains to 12v converter. Also they won't freeze.

A gas and electric coolbox is good as you can run it on gas whilst onsite, but you can't keep it inside the tent as it needs plenty of ventilation.

Best option is a compressor coolbox (they are also expensive). They use much less power and also have a thermostat so don't run 24/7.  They can also be switched to freezer mode.

we have a Waeco (were bought / became Dometic) 40 or 45litre - can't remember proper compressor fridge.

Its been absolutely brilliant - it was originally in our Defender where we didn't need the low voltage cut off but it's since been used in normal cars. It has very low power draw and will switch off saving enough battery to start the car still.

Its been used for the last few years in domestic freezer mode for additional space for food to be never eaten.

I know they are expensive but they hold their value should you ever need to sell.

Are you planning to run off electric hook up on campsites?

I went with a husky beer fridge sort of thing in the end for this - there are loads going for about £40-£50 on Facebook classifieds most of the time.

I read reviews of a lot of the small fridges that had a tiny freezer section and there were mixed comments about the effectiveness of the freezer bit.

We’ve a Dometic CF11 that sits in between the front seats of our velle. Runs off the leisure battery and just sips power. But you want a bigger one. Buy this from halfords

i bought one when our larger electric cool box died and it’s been brilliant. As well made as the dometic but something like 1/3 the cost. Proper compressor so will chill or freeze right down to -17. Runs for days off our leisure battery & has an intelligent battery cutout so it won’t leave you stranded if it’s run off the main batt. 240 adapter so you can use it at home as a party fridge or off a hookup in a campsite.

We've got a Veevor which as far as I can tell is a rebranded Alpicool - payed around £180 & it's been worth it's weight in gold.

If you don't have power there are some very cool (see what I did there?) ice boxes that keep stuff cold for 5 days but they're spendy

If you don’t have power
"portable power stations" or whatever they call them are getting pretty affordable now. Luckily I have a pretty beefy one for work that I keep in my van, more versatile than a leisure battery setup though as I can also stash it in my tent for camping! It'll power the fridge for a few days, and can be recharged by driving, hookup or solar.

Do you really?  A really good cool box packed with stuff that is already cold or frozen (a frozen bottle of water starts off as an icepack and then becomes cold water over time) and used sensibly to its kept closed as much as possible and not left in the hot sun / a baking car can do a really effective job without any power - you can even manage ice for the G&T for a few days in one.  Lower cost portable fridges usually sacrifice the quality of the insulation/design to keep the price down and so give you less flexibility buy little actual benefit.  Of course if you want icecream you may need an actual freezer, although a friend did put a food flask in the freezer, fill it with icecream and then pack it in his Igloo cooler with loads of ice and it was still frozen 3 days later.

you can get away with that for a weekend (or a day if it's REALLY hot) but not a week (unless you go score some more ice!) so just depends what kind of camping you do really.
