My phone is a bit past it (broken screen which I would repair no bother, but also tired battery and more inconveniently a charging port that doesn't connect to a cable very well any more.)
I want a new one, to buy outright, cheapish, definitely want something small by modern standards, but plenty of onboard storage (32GB should do - I have put SD cards in in the past but they or the connectors to them get unreliable with age). 4G obviously (I've seen some cheap Chinese ones that don't do 4G in the UK, I'd happily get a cheap Chinese one that did).
I've been recommended a Huawei (sp?) but I can't remember which one and as there are hundreds of them I'm not sure if any meet my wishes.
What should I get?
iPhone SE is a nice bit of kit, does all of the above, but 32GB is your upper limit. £240 brand new from John Lewis, has the added benefit of very cheap replacement screens (not massively robust though) if you're in the habit of breaking them.
Android wise the current Nokia range is meant to be good, they're trying for the 'Nokia of smartphones' so tough, good battery life etc over absolute performance. Start at about £100.
Honor 9 Lite or Moto G6 would be a good shout imo.
I'n in a similar quandry as my Huawei P8 Lite 2017 seems even slower and shorter lasting than it was at new. I got a refurb Pixel for £150 but it seems little better. Maybe my expectations are high (tho my P9 lite, lost, was way better than the P8)
I just got an iPhone SE through Tesco.
£16.75 a month over 3 years gets me the phone, 2GB data, 5000 mins and 5000 calls (I think!)
12mb camera and faster processor than iPhone 6 - plus not a ridiculous size.
I'm not really a techy person but more than enough for what I want for not that many pennies.
That rugged phone looked promising.... Until I got to the screen resolution. Shame.
The Moto G6 is a great phone for the money. Whichever version you buy.
Got Seadog the Younger the Amazon exclusive version and it's amazingly good. Yes, at that price, you will find other phones that will beat it in one area or another, but overall it's a really good all round performer.
I've been using a Moto G5S plus for a while now, and that too is a decent phone for the money, just wish Motorola would get the Android 8.0 update out for it!
One Plus?
I've a 3T, i think the latest model is the 5, it's a blinding bit of kit
Very happy with my Moto G6 for £200, though it might be a bit big for you. I would say USB-C is a must; mini USB was ok but micro is awful and should be avoided like the plague (from my experience of charging customer's phones in the pub).

720p not good enough for a 5" screen?
Tesco (and you!) obviously confident Apple will continue to support it for another 3 years at least then! I see they are still offering 3 yr contracts for the 6 as well 😲I just got an iPhone SE through Tesco.£16.75 a month over 3 years
What was that android phone with the mega battery everyone raved about?
Or what’s the best 5 inch screen phone with a replaceable battery?

Odd, never had a problem...

Are you elderly with failing eyesight?
Or a careless pisshead?
I'm typing this on an Xperia XZ1 that arrived today.
Waterproof, 64gb, Oreo and about to get Pie. Superb screen, noticeably better sound with earphones than old Moto g4. Good camera you can operate with gloves as it's a button.
It's taken 10mins to deactivate the Sony spamware on it. It's slippery so case on way.
It's on EE for £15/MTH (£40 upfront, but got that in cashback) unlimited calls and texts, 1gb of data is boosted to 6gb as I have EE broadband. From mobilephonesdirect, just untick the cashback box.

I'm still running my iPhone 5. The iOS version seems to have topped out at 10.3.3 but it runs fine so there are many years of useful life in an SE and iPhone 6 (just upgraded to iOS12 on my work 6 and it runs absolutely fine).
Just took a punt on an XZ1, spotted the last one in blac near m at Argos of all places for £279. Amazon is more.
Was looking at the Moto G6 but the sony looks like quite a good deal for the spec, shame the screen is not a bit bigger but I like small phone. Nokia 7 plus looks like a good deal too.
Just to say after an evening of playing on it, my personal XZ1 blows the work G6 out the water for speed... I'm really, really impressed - but then I am coming from a 3 yr old G4...
As above, some daft cheap deals on them at the moment.
I picked up a refurb Google Pixel from laptops direct for £150
Grade C, but looked new to me.
Great phone, the camera is extremely good - I've not taken a single pic with my proper camera on holiday yet
Much faster than the Moto G I had before, and no silly UI or anything. Had the newest Android the day it came out. It's a step up from previous versions
