6 was superb. Bit of fun with the mustang and focus... bit rubbish in the middle but the GT40 piece James did was pure classic petrolhead TV. Brilliant.

The nod to the TG Hoonigan around the Cenotaph was a bit cheap I thought. That was a great bit of TG tv. Should have stayed away.

The Le Mans section was great, and that's what they were really good at in the past. Some great stories to pull out and tell if they can add some more of those it should carry on.

Suspect the Ice Cream bit was added to get the Guardianista's frothed up, some free column inches and both parties get internet traffic, win/win.

I also like ice cream though I draw the line at lolly's.

Do you honestly think that? Even Clarkson looked a bit non-plussed at the words tumbling out of the hamster.

Oh yes, it wasn't carefully scripted at all.

Ah! The ice cream comment. At least those three are predictably consistent. Nothing to see here about a tasteless way of generating publicity. Unless you're an internet SJW, in which case. Carry on! You might even drown out the sound of those three chuckling at you.

The forum vamp sucks! btw?
😉

Social Justice Warrior...
... Anyway, onto important things. I watched the Top Gear Africa special for no other reason than it came up on catch up telly while I waited for The Grand Tour.
It was back to the three stupid arses messing around in cars on an epic journey, I've seen the Nabibian desert done on 4x4 videos, but did enjoy the tomfoolery. Most entertaining.
Looking forward to part 2.

Wow, that was a spectacular return to form. Great cars, great visuals, adventure, good seemingly off the cuff banter. Makes the first 6 episodes seem very ordinary indeed.

I’ve watched most of the GT episodes, and am pretty indifferent towards it. Certainly wouldn’t get Amazon Prime just for watch it.

I stumbled last night across some old Top Gear challenges episodes. In comparision to GT, the three of them look to be genuinely having a lot more fun, and the whole thing felt a lot less scripted. They all seemed a lot younger and less jaded.

Just goes to show that all of Amazon’s millions doesn’t necessarily beat the three of them buying £1500 bangers.

Thats the problem innit. Thrashing a £1500 'supercar' around before one of the cars blows a gasket/seal/whatever and breaks down is classic TG fodder, and all the better for it. Doing the same with three £200k supercars means the said gaskets/seals won't break so you're having to fill in the time with their witty 'banter' and 'japes'.

The studio/tent stuff is just dire on the Grand Tour. Fat american too.

For something thats always been popular with children there's a fair bit of random swearing in it too. Tricky to explain some of it to the little 'un when we watched one together.

So the series is now over, what's everyone's thoughts?

I think it's ok, not great but not awful either. Certainly better than the Chris Evans version of Top Gear!! Perfectly watchable while eating my grub on a Friday evening 🙂

Series 2 is planned for the autumn too, wonder what running changes they'll make?

Later episodes were better than the earlier ones I thought. I rewatch TG on Dave all the time, I doubt I would rewatch the earlier GT shows, especially episode 2.
Needs more controversy from clarkson, less obviously scripted nonsense, less of the American, a better track and no more celebrity rubbish.

Some proper laughable moments. Some rubbish, but on the whole good. I wouldn't pay for it though. 😈

Nah, watched the first two then cancelled Prime.

Can't honestly say I think I missed much.

I'm a TG fan so I loved the way TGT ended up. And the first episode was epic. Maybe just erase E2 from the files though...

I've just seen the trailer for the new series of Top Gear - it doesn't look great! How can you create chemistry with 3 people who have no character.

As for the The Grand Tour - I've really enjoyed it so far (apart from episode 2!). Nice to seem them let of the leash. Just makes you wonder how much good stuff got binned in the editing room when they were on Top Gear.

Did they really just fly to Dubai then spend most of the episode showing a film about a Golf GTI test drive in London? I'd like to see TGT accounts...

The whole tent thing makes zero sense. Scotland + Maseratis should be good....... oh they're fannying around in Northern France

Sponsorship? Maybe just somewhere to make the films
The whole tent thing makes zero sense.

Think it was covered earlier and it's a legal thing about not copying the TG studio idea

It got better. The celebrity braincrash thing needs to go, that was awful. Some of the short films were getting near what they'd achieved as Top Gear, some (that war games thing in South Africa for example) were far too long and contrived.

See what Series 2 brings...

The most disappointing thing for me is the lack or 'tour'. Or at least the lack of focus on the visited countries driving/car culture/etc.

When they went to Finland and mentioned all the big rally names, I was really hoping for some old school rallying. Nope. Not even anything to do with Finland at all in the whole show.

Stopped watching after that.

Is that the one shown the other evening, lasted around thirty seconds?
Really easy to tell from that how well the chemistry is working... 🙄

About £4.5m per show.

£100K on content and £4.4m on hotels, flights and catering is my guess.
