Watched both episodes again with my dad last night, he loved it!

All these people saying it's not serious enough and not actually reviewing the cars: it was never going to be that in any way. It's 3 oldish blokes mucking about doing stuff that happens to involve cars. Last Of The Summer Wine on wheels etc.

I'd say it will take half the first series to settle into it's identity, took 'new' Top Gear a series or two to get going!

But.. they were in Jo'burg.. why not film the special forces 30mins there?

Wasted opportunity to show what an amazingly diverse country SA is. A challenge or two in and around that area would have showcased the country.. instead they shot the special forces bit in Israel or wherever..

Seems pointless taking the tent to countries if they don't showcase them.

Yep, ep2, oh dear.

I think TG was at its best when they did challenges, the caravan stuff etc, that's what I'd hope fir.

And I can't stand that US driver chap.

Or, as JC puts it - Three middle aged men falling over and catching fire.

E02 was very disappointing - I was expecting some good stuff from SA especially when it started with the 4x4s in the opening segment, all we got was a short section on spinning and 'Theron' being eaten by a 'lion'.

The special needs forces thing was utter guff and the jibbering random fat headed yank wants me to repeatedly punch his big squidgy face that protrudes from his helmet.

Richard Hammond - hopefully you'll look back someday and think 'what was I doing?'

So much potential yet so much disappointment.

3 blokes dicking about & getting paid for it.

Good luck to them.

Suspend your disbelief & park your brain in a jar - it's not that bad.

Sh1t, it's a damn sight better than Strictly Come Essex & it's bastardly hideous offspring!

Seeing the American stig climbing into the Aston would have been the highlight of episode 2, if they had shown it. Overall very tedious.

Gave the 2nd episode a go last night. Concluded it's definitely not for me. They have to have done their research in which case I must be a non standard middle aged man. They seemed to have turned up the wick on all the annoying elements of the old show and excluded its redeeming features. I found the trio tolerable when they were on a road trip with a combination of boys on tour, car review and travel show; the rest was just filler. I might tune back in if the programme summary ever has the Grand Tour doing an actual tour.

I tried episode 2 last night, and even after a couple of beers it was hard to raise a smile.

If you like it, great, but I'm trying hard to see where all the rave reviews are coming from

It's dirty TV, should be sponsored by Greggs.

I don't mind it, but I do wish they'd do something similar to the specials, based around where in the world they are supposed to be.
The tired old Top Gear style features aren't really needed any more.

Still willing to give it a few more watches, but Episode 2 was definately worse than the first.

Long-time TG fan here.
I've now watched both episodes of the Grand Tour and am not totally blown away.
The army thing in episode 2 was tedious and just crap.
I'll give it a go for a couple more weeks but not impressed so far.

Really enjoyed Episode one although I was a little perplexed by the Celeb thing which I kinda understand but does seem very pointless - just don't bother.

Episode 2 - really?? what was the deal with the Army thing - completely pointless all the going back etc. it just got dull very quickly.

3rd one wasn't bad, hammond a bit annoying but I guess that was the point. Curious what the deal was with JC's house.

Not watched it yet but seeing the news reports over the summer with regard to the unusual approach to the rebuild of his house, kind of gave away what the scripted "surprise" outcome will be.

Didn't get all the way through the 2nd one. Rather overstretching the idea considering the budget they had.

Glad I'm only trialling Prime for my Christmas shopping.

A better episode certainly, bit more like the traditional Top Gear road trip style thing.
The celebrity death stuff is just dire though.

Clarkson's house explosion was real - there was an article in one of the papers saying that the neighbours had complained because they weren't aware it was going to be blown up. Apparently he's building a new £6 million house on the same site with the usual OTT celebrity shit like cinemas and a bowling alley...

Far better episode.

The house was knocked down, they only did bits and pretend to blow it up. Mega explosion though must have been ridiculously loud.

I believe they may have said that already.

Hammond? Annoying? Anyone would think that was what they were trying to do...

Anyway, hate to get all serious and stuff but the Vulcan was a lovely piece of kit. Proper money no object and to hell with what it's actually used for engineering.

And that SRT Hellcat. 18.5 gal in 13 miles 😯

Well, I used the opportunity of sofa-based man-flu & the last few days of my Prime trial to watch the second Grand Tour on Wednesday.

I turned it off after 40 mins. Yeah, the expensive Aston was nice, but the article on it wasn't great & Clarkson did that really funny thing of struggling to get into a car that he does every time he has to clamber into a track oriented car.....

The army thing...........?! What?! Erm.......crap.

Dead celebrity thing....erm..........

Spinning car thing........could have been good if James May had actually engaged with the people doing it & they'd have actually told you something about it, or if he'd have actually had the chance to try it. Instead they sat him in the car & he looked scared, annoyed & old....again......

Cancelled my trial & couldn't really care if I see another one or not.

Ep.4 - filmed in the town I grew up in and in the pub I had my first job in!!

Was fun but seemed a bit safe, apart from the odd swear word. Good to see they're doing the modified car stuff still though.

Watched the first 4 and pretty 'meh' for me. Has some great bits in it, but so much tosh for my liking. Hammond is very irritating, May seems like he doesn't really want to be there and Clarkson's just shouting louder really. Wish they would bin all the over staged scripts and get back to the three of them just chatting and having a laugh. Old Top Gear went then same way at the end. Once Chris Evans was removed I quite liked the new Top Gear and over all Grand Tour isn't massively better just has more money thrown at it. Much more.

All they need to do is drive from a to c stopping off at b to drive some fast cars on a track.
If they complete their challenges they get to drive the nice cars next week, if they don't it's bangers.
Do a trip on each continent to soak up the big budget.
They really aren't justifying the budget.

Just watched it. Like TG was for ages; almost OK in parts, the bits where they arse about, possibly unscripted. Rest is just filler. It's getting slightly better with each episode though, unlike Evans' version did. Figure they are getting comfortable with their new employers.

They must be getting Ramsay to do the catering, as I can't see where the budget is going - unless that's what the BBC paid per episode?

1 good. 2 crap. 3 ok. 4 ok. Hmmm. Dissapointed as there are bits i love. Less script. Less obvious stupid. How hard can that be?

I've seen 3 out of 4 so far, and, on average, I'd give it 6/10.
I've also been watching some old editions on Dave this week. Nothing on Amazon had me laughing out-loud (even on a repeat) like the old versions. (Particularly the door falling off a Rover SD1 when full of water.)
But, having Amazon Prime, I've found other stuff I've enjoyed.

Average at best.

Having the tent in each location is a bit pointless if they then go off somewhere completely different for each episode - surely the whole point of having a portable studio is to set it up and then do things at that site?! It just seems disconnected - it's not at the test track, it isn't in the location of that week's storyboard film, it's just a random location to get a bunch of people to come and fawn over the Three Stooges.

It's sort of settling down but I think all that it's done is to highlight how tired and formulaic the whole show actually was. BBC relaunch was a rush job and while it had some good bits it too had really run out of ideas. This is the same - in trying so hard not to be Top Gear, it's just showing that it's actually Top Gear and it's all old hat.

The question of why leave is probably all about money.

Clarkson's books are telling you the same thing; regurgitated column inches with no inclination to raise a solitary finger to embellish or to create a stream of thought.

Was this done in an intelligent broadsheet?

No. It's in a Murdoch pastiche of what a broadsheet used to be.

So you just know his intent is to make money, for its own sake.

Don't get me started on May 'The reassembler'!

Top Gear was better. This is more puerile. Hammond is even worse than he was. Started #5 - yes, I hung in that long - switched off. Even the boy said was boring.

Very meh this time.
The car battleships was simply a way of (literally) burning an awful lot of money.
The Morocco thing was fairly pointless. Started off OK then degenerated into stupid scripted jokes.

And the sooner they get rid of the celebrity death thing the better.

I've now seen the first two episodes so feel qualified to join in the fun on this thread (albeit not having bothered to read all that up there^).

Conclusion? First episode was full of the kind of cars the kids and I drool over almost daily and was hence enjoyed immensely, despite expecting something a little more different.

Episode 2? Crap. Drivel. Potentially good segments like the Aston Martin Vulcan were massively overshadowed by that awful piece with the VIP rescue. I watched in disbelief wondering (a) what it had to do with a car show (b) why the producers thought it deserved all that airtime when it stopped being entertaining after the first couple of minutes.

Should I bother with episode 3?
