We've just moved from a flat to a house with garden.
Two weeks in and the grass is already getting out of control.
Thus we need to get our first lawn mower.
On Gumtree locally I can pick up a Honda izy self propelled described as 'plenty of life left, blades just sharpened' for £120. Would this be worth picking up or am I better spending the money on a new one from screwfix etc.? If so, what for under £150?
Is the Honda a Petrol? Do you really need a petrol one?
I think there was a thread not long back on this and everyone was saying Bosch electric.
How big is the lawn? Honda engines do tend to run and run and run. I'd be happy with an 18" Honda for a medium sized lawn, I'd say anything 250m2 or over I'd want petrol but I've no patience for watching an electric mower struggle with grass! Turn a 45 minute job into a 5 minute one and enjoy a beer with the spare time. Plus a petrol will cut wet grass better so you don't even need to wait for a bone dry day
Spend another £50 and get this new great engine.
More details. Front lawn is ~40m^2, back ~180m^2.
Honda is a 21" petrol.
I've got less lawn and a ride on mower. Get a ride on mower. It gives you an excuse to build a really big she'd to keep it in.
Do you have lots of storage?
Petrol ones take up more room as they can't be stood up.
The Honda should start first pull, other than that it'll probably run till the steel deck rusts so check that.
I've got a mower with a Briggs and Stratton engine but used to have a mountfield with a Honda engine. The Honda was ancient yet it started easily first pull and was better with longer grass than my new one. Also smoother. The b and s is harder to start too.
Deck was knackered in the old mower which is why I got a new one. Still a good mower and does nice stripes.
A 21" mower is massive by the way.
No problem for space. Think I'll go out and check the Honda...
Mowers are like vans...."too big" just isn't a thing.
Although if it's hand pushed I'd avoid a 21". And self propelled means more things to go wrong.
Go for the Honda. The blade is cheap to replace and oth parts are plentiful. Check for rust around the deck and that the bag isn't holed. It should start easily. The carb jet on ours sometimes gets clogged with dirt. Easy fix with plenty of vids on YouTube to help. Best bang for buck mower out there
Think it was my thread the other week. Went For a new Izzy in the end, should see me out!
Few years ago my old (very old) hayter mower stopped working and became uneconomical to repair. I sold it for £95 at a carboot and bought a second hand, newly serviced etc Honda mower via EBay for £130. It has been faultless and starts first time every time.
Stihl Viking. Mower. 18inch cut blade. I use them on my gardening rounds. Superb for the money. Light to pick up also. Picks up grass in the wet very well

Stihl Viking. Mower. 18inch cut blade.
That's what I've got and it's really rather good for the price. £180 brand new
I've got a Toro timemaster. 30 inch cut. It's a step below a ride on but not by much. It's epic and cuts fast. I've got slopes that would be difficult in a ride on, didn't have storage for one and could afford a decent one anyway. Toro was spendy enough but the time savings are huge over a 21" mountfield with a Honda engine
I have the screwfix mower linked above. Decent thing. Starts every time, been 3 years now and only topped up oil and checked spark plug. 9m by 15m lawn and it takes under 20 mins. This coupled with a cheap cordless strimmer from b&q . You would regret buying anything with a plug and lead just too much time faffing and not running the cable over.
honda izy should have an alu deck - go get it i'd say!!!
I'm pretty certain mine is steel
