Tomorrow I take delivery of nearly new 390 Duke. I'm rather pleased with it and would like to hold on to it rather than having it nicked. I have a garage to keep it in overnight with a ground anchor and Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit lock but what about when leaving it parked whilst out and about.
Are the disc locks any good? Any advice would be very gratefully received.
Ian
Abus granite extreme. Just don’t leave it on and try to ride away. The discs on my 950sm are €289 a piece, plus fittting. As I discovered, in Stuttgart, the day after Oktoberfest, half way through a European tour. D’OH!
Disc locks are just a great little deterrant, especialLy in London where kids will crack your steering lock in 4 seconds and push your bike off down the road in order to work on it later on.
For a chain i would look at some of the videos of Pragmasis chains. They are much cheaper than the likes of abus as well, which seem to get poor reviews.
I would carry a big d lock at all times. try to lock it to a piece of street furniture. disc locks are a minimal deterrant
I use a Xena XX16 alarmed disc lock when out and about, and also when it’s in the garage. Small, sturdy, loud. I also have a top of the range Almax chain and Squire padlock secured to a ground anchor.
I rarely leave the bike alone when out and about, and don’t commute on it. If I did it would have a good lock that I could use to secure the bike to some street furniture.
Oxford Nemesis through the rear sprocket and Abus Granit Victory or your Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit though the front disc.
At home use an Almax or Pragmasis 16mm+ chain and Squire padlock to your ground anchor. Make sure the chain never rests on the floor.
Disk locks are a waste of time. Two normal sized guys can pick up even a big touring bike and have it in the back of a van in seconds. An insulated van will also mean that any alarm going off won’t be heard.
There was a chap on Visordown a while back who tested most locks and chains but I’m afraid I can’t remember which one he liked best! Top tip with a chain, chain the bike too something and not through a wheel, get the chain as tight as possible and don’t have any of it on the ground.
